Angry I just don't understand some of the people that inhabit this world???

Ok, so last night I'm Downtown in Guangzhou hanging out with an African buddy of mine when we hear screeching tires across the street. We look over there and a cab had hit some young lady (we'll probably late 20's) so I immediately start to rush over there.

I had to wait a few seconds as there was still cars passing, this is a super busy place. So I get over there and by that time this foreign girl (I say she's foriegn, she was white, I live in China) had allredy gotten the girl over to the curb. As I glanced over there I could tell she was not seriously hurt, possible broken bone but no lacerations. Chinese are notorios for not looking both ways when they cross the street, I have to remind my wife every single freaken time, and I have literally pulled Chinese people back from stepping off the curb into the path of a bus, saving an aweful scene. I figured the girl was just going to cross the street and got clipped.

Well the cab driver had not yet turned the cab off or was making any attempt to get out of the car. This is also common, they will drive off......there must be 3 million cabs in this city maybe alot more, and the are all Jetttas for some reason. So it would be easy to just get away. So I open his door and reach in, turn the car off and pull the guy out and told him to go wait on the sidewalk.

Well then I turn my attention to the girl. The foreign girl was kind of cradling her, but the yound ladies legs were still out in the street as she was just sitting on the curb. So I go over and tell the foreign lady "Hey I was in the US military and have had some medical training, how about we get the girl on the sidewalk out of the street and let me take a look at her?" so then the foreign girls just yells" Back up!!! give her some space!!"

So I say (not in a condecending way but out of genuine curriosity. "Are you a doctor or a nurse?" She then yells again "Just get back!!!! give her some room to breath!!" So I say "what you are just going to deny me the chance to help her????"

Ok ,by then a small crowd had gathered, and this Arabic guy says "Hey man why don't you just back the F up" At that point I was infuriated by the whole way this had went down and I layed into him with explitives, that I won't say here, but if someone said those things to me I'd probably have to hurt them real bad.

So by then 2 Chinese cops show up, and one immediately seen what was going on with me and this other guy and comes in between us. The cop then takes me to the back of the car, and I start telling him what I seen during the accident (as best I could, my Chinese is ok, but not great) So I look over to my right and this Arabic guy is grabbing my African buddies face and talking ST to him. So I go over there and push the guy away and step back to get ready to start throwing hands. Well he wanted no part of that, but all the sudden 2 more Arabic guys show up and then all 3 of them start talking crap to me. And I cursed all 3 of them, their mothers, anything I could think of to say.

I just think it was such BS...here I am trying to help this lady, stopped the cab driver from leaving the scene, and I'm the F'n bad guy??

What did the cops end up doing?

Were you drunk? or could these folks have percieved you as being drunk?

At that point, you should have slipped the cabbie some cash and asked that he give it another try.

Cops here are also notorious for not doing anything, hell I've literally seen cops stand there and watch 2 people duke it out.

It was still fairly early in the evening and I had about 3 beers by then, but I'm Irish so 3 beers to me like drinking 3 glasses of water. I don't think I would have been percieved as drunk when I was trying to help for sure... Perhaps after they acted like asshats and I flipped out on them they might have thought so, but that was after the fact.

The 3 Arabic guys ended up catching a cab as soon as things started getting real heated, of course like punks they were yelling crap out of the window as the left. I stayed there until the ambulance got there.. Just steaming.....

Wow, that sounds infuriating. It's amazing how people can be so stupid. You were doing the right thing all the way.

I don't know if it was because I mentioned my service in th US Military that they started acting like jackasses but I can think of no other reason. Even the foreign girl, while she spoke English, I could tell it was an eastern European accent...

I'm so sorry you had to experience that, steelwall. Being a Good Samaritan just isn't appreciated in today's bizarro world. I've been in your shoes several times (though I didn't experience as much hostility as you did) and you think I would have learned my lesson, but I'll continue to attempt to help others who are in trouble because that's the way I was raised and one day, the shoe might be on the other foot.

I have a similar story...

I make my living as a surgeon----
Several years ago I was walking through a parking lot to meet some friends of mine at a bar/restaurant when I saw this large gathering of people come together and then dissipate just as quickly. Apparently there was a fight and some guy got slashed with a knife across the abdomen (the other guy ran away after he slashed the guy). I ran up to the guy that got slashed and got him to sit down ( I dentified myself as a doctor). Immediately the "Give him some air " Idiots showed up---they always do---what makes people think that backing away from an injured person is the best way to help him?.

Next, the ambulance showed up----

The EMT (not even a certified Paramedic, but just "an ambulance person" (no offense to anyone on this board that may be an EMT...) starts to push me away---"Sir, back away..." Despite the fact that I continue to Identify myself as a Surgeon.
So here I am, probably the most qualified person in the area to help this guy and I've got an EMT literally escorting me away from the patient instead of listening to what I'm saying to him or doing anything to help the patient himself.

Here's the most ironic part---
I was the Surgeon-on-call for the Emergency Room that night. If the guy needed to go to the Operating Room, I was going to be the one to take him. The EMT ignored this fact when I tried to explain it----and it was all I could do not to punch the guy in the face as he was dragging me away from what ultimately might be a person I needed to operate on.

I didn't push the issue too much because I was able to see that the slash was mostly superficial----it would only require sutures that the ER doc could place...There was no deep cut (no intestines visible or anything like that).

I called the director of the ambulance company the next morning to explain the situation to him and how his EMT actually may have impeded medical care, but nothing ever came of the phone call....

I think some people may have good intentions and maybe try to help, but when they don't know what they are doing they simply allow their testosterone to take over and can't admit that someone else may actually know more than they do---somehow they aren't able to back away themselves to let a more qualified person take over. That's when the "Give him Air" shouts start happening....
