You can tweak the power saving settings in the control panel.

I've been trying to push a similar initiative at my company as we have 600+ desktops here. However, it's gotten a lot of pushback from our developers and editors who remote into their desktops via VPN on a fairly regular basis to do work from home during the evening. It's a battle I'm not going to win. Like you I leave my home PC on constantly, though.

I haven't shut down my PC for 3 years - it runs like a top. Let it sleep in powersave mode.

More boogy-man fears from the tree huggers..

I don't think the BIOS has much to gleam from a reboot in terms of benefits. But the OS can, if you have installed a lot of software or drivers and ahven't rebooted, it can cause some issues. The only real way to keep you PC running in tip top shape is to uninstall stuff you don't use, use a registry cleaner every so often (ccleaner is a good one) and defrag often.

Powering up and down a PC wears on the fans and hard drives. They are designed with constant running in mind.
exactly

Plus I love sleep mode. I only shut down my PC when I'm not going to use it for a long time. and even then I'm not sure if it's necesary
