Default Steelers take pre-draft look at UNC tight end

The Steelers are hosting University of North Carolina tight end Richard Quinn today as they prepare for the NFL draft.

The 6-4, 260-pound Quinn played sparingly at North Carolina and caught just 12 passes for 124 yards and a pair of touchdowns during his career.

I doubt that.... They'd be looking at somebody a lot better than this dud!

If I'm not mistaken, don't we already have a guy from UNC who didn't play very much in college on our roster? You know, that guy that has the longest run in Super Bowl history?

He was completely underutilized at TE at North Carolina. Two things you need to know about him: If his parents weren't Tarheel people, he'd have gotten a scholarship from OSU (He's from Maple Heights, OH), and he's a very good blocking TE.

I am a Tar-Heels fan, and they have not been able to run the ball in years, so he cant be too good of a blocking TE.

Overview
With only 12 career receptions for 124 yards and two touchdowns, Quinn's value lies in his blocking. Nicknamed "Big Rich," he plays up to his moniker, giving the Tar Heels essentially another offensive tackle at the line of scrimmage. With many of today's NFL offenses preferring receiving specialists at tight end, Quinn could still be waiting to hear his name called late in the draft. However, there are always teams on the lookout for physical run blockers capable of sneaking off the line of scrimmage for short-yardage passes. In this capacity, Quinn could find a niche in the pros.

Analysis
Positives: Naturally large man with a powerful upper and lower body. Good initial quickness off the snap to gain an advantage as a run blocker. Good hand placement and upper body strength to pop the defender. Plays with leverage. Can get under the pads of the defender and drive him off the line of scrimmage. Has the phone booth quickness to get to the second level and shows at least adequate lateral quickness to block in space. Uses his big frame to shield defenders from the ball as a receiver. At least marginal hands for the reception. Gets low and can run through arm-tackles to gain positive yardage after the reception.

Negatives: Lacks the straight-line speed to be more than a short-range target in the passing game. Lumbers off the snap, and lacks the quick feet to consistently gain separation as a route-runner. Has to gather himself and too often rounds off his routes. Lacks the flexibility to consistently make receptions outside of his frame. Requires a Combine check on his shoulder; missed the entire 2006 season after fracturing his right shoulder blade in August 2006.

They have him as the 8th best TE in the draft. Mid-Late 4th round value.

Looks like a guy in the Bruener / Tuman mold

Do you think the Steelers would trade Spaeth to some team who's looking for a TE that is more of a receiver than blocker? Maybe we'd carry McHugh as a FB on the roster.

I have looked at some rankings that have him as a FA pickup. The Steelers seem to be looking at him for his blocking ability, which they definitely need. As a free agent pickup, that would be great. I wouldn't be a fan of them spending a fourth on a TE.

One thing I like however is that the Colbert and company seem to be spending a lot of time on lower round prospects and possible FA signings. Hopefully they recognize the need to do better on day two than they have done in the past, if for no other reason than the number of contracts that will be up next year on the team!

I was thinking the exact same thing. It looks like they have a clear plan for the lower rounds this year and maybe a specific plan for the possible UDFA's.

There are going to be some spots made available for CB's and WR's in the 7th and also as UDFA's looking at the list of players visiting. Scout the players now so that they really do not become wasted picks made at the death who then go onto being scouted in detail for the first time at training camp and ultimately cut.
