Default Bires: Colbert hopes for success in third round

Bires: Colbert hopes for success in third round
http://www.timesonline.com/articles/...0180436570.txt
By Mike Bires, Times Sports Staff

PITTSBURGH — On a wild and crazy Day 1 of the NFL Draft, how appropriate it was that the Steelers swung a deal.

Before it was the Steelers’ turn to select with the 64th and last overall pick of the day, no less than 11 trades had been consummated throughout the league.

Heck, the Cleveland Browns swapped picks three times in the first round alone, so you had to figure that Kevin “Trader Jack” Colbert would not be denied.

After all, it’s been three years since Colbert last orchestrated a draft-day deal.

And so it was Saturday night when the Steelers bartered with the Denver Broncos. In exchange for the last pick of the second round as well as their fourth-round pick, the Steelers received both of the Broncos’ third-round picks.

So the Steelers’ first day effort consisted of just one pick: Evander “Ziggy” Hood, a defensive tackle out of Missouri who’ll play D-end for the Steelers.

For fans wanting more from the Steelers on Saturday, hold your criticism. At least the Steelers have three choices today in the third round.

Colbert and coach Mike Tomlin decided that there wasn’t much difference between the talent available at 64 overall and 79, 84 and 96.

So with those three picks today, expect the Steelers to go after prospects at positions where there’s a need: offensive line, cornerback, wide receiver and maybe inside linebacker.

“The action in the second round got fast and furious, and quite honestly, we were trying to trade up,” Colbert said of all the trade talk between teams Saturday. “We didn’t want to vacate the premises.”

Every time the Steelers called a team in hopes of trading down, they got a call back.

“No thanks,” was the response. “We’re going to make our pick.”

Colbert wouldn’t say if had targeted a certain player in the event he could have traded up. And, obviously, he wouldn’t say who the Steelers will target today.

All he would say is that, “Hopefully, we’ll come out of it with three quality guys.”

Colbert can only hope it turns out well.

Check out the Steelers’ last five third-round picks:

- Tackle Trai Essex in 2005. He’s been a back-up the past four years.

- Safety Anthony Smith and wide receiver/kick return specialist Willie Reid in 2006. Reid was cut last year at training camp. Smith was cut after the 2008 season.

- Tight end Matt Spaeth in 2007. Spaeth has been a solid backup the past two years. But for as long as Heath Miller stays in Pittsburgh, Spaeth will always be a second-stringer.

- Linebacker Bruce Davis last year. Davis only played in five games as a rookie and didn’t even dress for a game after Nov. 11.

So Colbert hopes to hit it big with at least one of those third-round picks today.

(I wonder if other teams were afraid to trade with the Steelers or if we did not offer enough or maybe the other teams just wanted their picks. - jgm)

The 32nd pick doesn't have a lot of trading value, so it's not too surprising.

my only problem with this is colberts success rate on 3rd rounders.....it drops from about 71 % on 2nd rounders...to 50 % on 3 rd rounders.....
