Steelers' Morgan to have surgery on fractured fibula

The Pittsburgh Steelers have lost wide receiver and kickoff return man Quincy Morgan to a fractured right fibula sustained in Sunday's wild-card victory at Cincinnati, an injury that forced the five-year veteran onto injured reserve Tuesday and will require surgery.

To replace Morgan on the roster, Pittsburgh re-signed wide receiver Lee Mays, who had been with the Steelers the past three years but was released early this season.

It is believed that starting cornerback Ike Taylor, who took over the kickoff return chores last weekend after Morgan left the game in the first quarter, will assume those duties for Sunday's divisional-round matchup against the Indianapolis Colts. Morgan also served as the Steelers' No. 4 wide receiver and Sean Morey will probably take that role.

The injury to Morgan was originally diagnosed as a high ankle sprain but further tests revealed the fracture.

Morgan was signed by the Steelers just before the start of the season after he was released by the Dallas Cowboys. The former Kansas State star averaged 25.3 yards on 23 kickoff returns and also had nine receptions for 150 yards and two touchdowns. Morgan will be an unrestricted free agent this spring and, while Pittsburgh would like to retain him, he might test the market.

Taylor has returned kickoffs in the past but he logged just three runbacks this season for an average of only 19.7 yards.

Mays had 11 catches for 154 yards in his three previous season with the Steelers and was used primarily as a No. 4 wideout and on special teams.
