Default Verron Haynes signs with the Falcons

Falcons sign ex-UGA running back Haynes
By FROM STAFF REPORTS

Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Wednesday, April 29, 2009

The Falcons signed former Georgia Bulldogs running back Verron Haynes on Wednesday and released wide receiver Troy Bergeron.

Haynes, 5-9, 222 pounds, played two seasons at Georgia, and might be best known for catching a game-winning touchdown pass at Tennessee in 2001, a play made famous by radio voice Larry Munson “hobnailed boot” call. That season Haynes led Georgia in rushing with 691 yards.

Haynes also played at North Springs High School, and he was a fifth-round draft choice of the Steelers in the 2002 draft. In six seasons with the Steelers, Haynes rushed for 738 yards on 174 carries and scored three touchdowns, and he caught 58 passes for 429 yards and two touchdowns.

Haynes did not play in 2008.

Bergeron, a three-year AFL veteran with the Georgia Force, had a short stay with the Falcons, who had signed him Tuesday.

I don't see Haynes making it out of camp. But it's nice to see him getting a chance elsewhere

Its cool that he is getting another chance to play but it isn't gonna happen. They have a lot of good backs down there. Maybe if he does well on special teams but I don't think so. I liked him in Pittsburgh so I hope the best.

Haynes is a great guy and is a very good third down back. He can also play fullback. Maybe he slips in with the Falcons as their third running back. I know with Turner, Norwood, Mughelli and a couple other decent guys it will be a tough team to make for Verron, but I really would love to see him get another shot. He is by far one of my favorite Steelers of all time.

Falcons shuold be a good match for him. He's getting a bit long in the tooth, but he came in the league late, so i dont anticipate many longevity issues for him. Michael Turner, Jerious Norwood, and Verron Haynes would be a very formidable backfield.
