Default Townsend still has a lot to offer Steelers

Townsend still has a lot to offer Steelers

Cornerback Deshea Townsend has been getting some snaps at safety.

But that doesn't make this mini camp any different than previous ones held under Steelers coach Mike Tomlin, who is a big proponent of "position flexibility" given the limitations of 53-man rosters in the NFL.

"They always let me mess around at camp at safety because you never know when guys go down," Townsend said. "That's great because I don't have to run around as much as minicamp."

Anything that can preserve legs that have 11 NFL seasons of tread on them is a good thing. That is not to say that the 33-year-old Townsend is feeling his age these days or that he sees the end anytime soon to what has been a solid career.

"I most definitely want another contract," said Townsend, who is going into the final year of his deal with the Steelers, "and if it's not here it's somewhere. I'm still able to add a lot to whoever I'm playing for. I play nickel, corner, safety so there's a lot to be said."

Townsend figures to play nickel back again for the Steelers this season, and his value to the team goes beyond what he does on the field.

Townsend has long been a mentor to younger players and he can help tutor rookie cornerbacks Keenan Lewis and Joe Burnett, who were taken in the third and fifth round, respectively, of this year's NFL draft.

Nobody on the Steelers has a better understanding of the defense than Townsend, which explains why he has played for so long even though he has never been the biggest or fastest guy.

"I could play nose guard," the 5-10, 190-pound Townsend joked, "but I might not win any battles."

Nice move, you got to love Deshea. He's one of those players that you NEED on the field regardless of situation. Moving him to safety is a great move to get him more reps as a nickel and dime back, and will probably extend his career a couple more years.

It will be interesting to see if they sign him to a 3 or 4 year deal. Probably not but we will see.

Around my house we refer shea as the old man on D lol. Not to many corners like him he has a had a great run at Corner. I hope we do sign him for a few more years he would make a excellent mentor for the young guys. On harrisons TD in the super bowl my youngest son every time he sees the reply he screams give it to old man he wants give it to him.

His Steeler legacy was cemented by his pick 6 in the Dallas game to win it. Not counting the Super Bowl... one of, if not the top play of the year.

His versatility will allow one of the younger guys a roster spot. The secondary is going to start to get much younger, IMO. I could see them going into this season with Mundy as the only backup safety, with Townsend being the other at CB/S.

Never count this dude out... I had him pegged as "over and out" before his last contract extension, and I think he started for another 2 years after that. The dude is like Benjamin Button!
