Default AFC North Walker's weekend mailbag

Walker's weekend mailbag
May 30, 2009 1:00 PM

Posted by ESPN.com's James Walker

As always, send any questions you have to our AFC North inbox. Let's see what's on the minds of AFC North readers this weekend.

Jason Mills from Knoxville, TN writes: Hey Walker! It's been a while man. I had a question regarding Mewelde Moore for the Steelers. He proved to be a viable asset to the Steelers, but with the return of Rashard Mendenhall and the drafting of Frank "The Tank" Summers will his role be even more limited than previously expected?

James Walker: Good question as usual, Jason. Moore's role shouldn't diminish all that much this season. Pittsburgh's coaching staff considers him a secret weapon on third down, and a guy who comes in and does whatever it takes to move the chains. What will change is his opportunity to be a featured back, which happened for a few games last year due to injuries. That is where Mendenhall would come in, if necessary, in 2009. Summers still has to earn a role on the team. Based on his build, he looks like he could help Pittsburgh in short-yardage situations, where the team struggled last year.

(Other questions asked in the weekend mail bag were not about the Steelers - mesa)

It's still early, camp will tell, but the depth at the skill positions looks pretty good. Should have some great competitions in camp, just how Tomlin likes it.

Even the LBing core without Foote isn't as bad it seemed. I have no problem with Fox as a backup inside, and Woods is an extremely determined young player.

I don't think Moore's roll will be any different then last year. His number will be called just as much this year as last. He is a great 3rd down player when we need him.

moore was frickin huge for the steelers last year !!! without him they may have not even made the playoffs .... i found it kinda aggravating how as soon as parker came back, he seldom seen the ball, EVEN when parker was obviously not gonna have a good day. i just hope that if summers has a good off season, that he don't get squeezed out because of a numbers game.... or put on the practice squad and signed away elsewhere ......i'm sure whiz will be watching....
