Default Moore doesn't mind doing more

Mewelde Moore was a do-it-all running back for the Steelers last year, coming in on third down, catching passes out of the backfield, and filling in as a starter when injuries hit.

For him, it was just a matter of doing what was asked of him when he signed with the team as a free agent.

“I was asked to come here and do a job, and we covered every aspect of what I did,” said Moore. “I trained that way and I train that way now. Those were the things we talked about doing and I was prepared. I was happy to help the team out.”

Moore also was a part of the return game on a limited basis and wouldn’t mind increasing that work load this year.

“I anticipate being a factor period,” said Moore. “That is just my deal. I don’t focus on just one thing. I do everything and I am asked to do a lot of things. I have to have all of my tools sharpened at all times. I can’t focus on one thing. I have to be a factor and be ready to go on a moments notice and be ready to go where asked.”

Former first-round draft choice Lawrence Timmons has a new role this offseason, starting inside linebacker.

Timmons has taken over the position formerly held by Larry Foote, who was released during the team’s OTA’s and has since signed with the Detroit Lions.

Timmons, who played in a back-up role and was the nickel linebacker, is using the OTA’s to make sure that he is ready when training camp kicks off later in the summer.

“I am just trying to get better every day,” said Timmons. “I am listening to my coaches and trying to help out the team as much as possible.

“This is practice. We are just out here trying to get better. I am studying in the film room. I am trying to improve as much as possible and get as good as I can be.”

While he hasn’t been practicing during OTA’s and admits they are more valuable for the younger players, Hines Ward is still getting something out of the practices.

“I am over there talking to Coach (Dick) LeBeau, asking him the coverages and understanding my role and seeing myself run a route against the coverage,” said Ward. “I am picking his brain about situational football. I am playing the game within the game. It’s about having a better understanding. It’s more mental work than physical.”

Sadly, Hines Ward will not be remembered outside of Pittsburgh for the work ethic and the head that is in each game. It really is a shame, because it is simply so impressive.

Unfortunately your right. More than anything, outside of Steeler nation he's the 'dirty guy' (with the smile).

Well, maybe if he show boated a little more, dropped a few more easy passes and threw a temper tanturm at his coaches once in a while, he'd be recognized as elite.

Till then...he's just a hard nosed player who enjoys the game.

Moore is one of my favorite players. It was really irritating to me that he got parked on the bench when Willie was playing. He is far more versatile than Willie could ever think of being because he can CATCH THE DAMN BALL out of the backfield and then GET LOTS OF YARDS after doing so. Willie is one dimensional. I admit that speed is a good dimension to have, but he has no cutback capability at all. Moore is a great player to have back there but Mendenhall will probably cut Moore's reps even more. And that is a shame. It shows what a great RB corps this team has.

They'll remember him. Their drawers will remember him.

I'm glad he's ready to help however he can, but if past precedent is any indicator, you can expect Moore, Mendenhall and Summers to average roughly 0 touches per game, unless Parker gets a broken leg, the plague and AIDS all at once.

It will be hard for Moores work load to increase with the crowded backfield we have.
