Default An early, early, early look at the 53- man roster

OK, you asked for it, so here it is, an early, early, early look at the 53-man roster.

QB (3): Ben Roethlisberger, Charlie Batch, Dennis Dixon. No explanation needed here.

RB (5): Willie Parker, Mewelde Moore, Rashard Mendenhall, Frank Summers, Carey Davis. Davis makes it on his ability to play special teams.

WR (5): Hines Ward, Santonio Holmes, Shaun McDonald, Limas Sweed, Mike Wallace. Sorry Dallas Baker. You're not making this club. McDonald beats out Brandon Williams.

TE (3): Heath Miller, Matt Spaeth, Sean McHugh. No surprises here. David Johnson goes to the practice squad.

OL (10): Max Starks, Chris Kemoeatu, Justin Hartwig, Darnell Stapleton, Wilie Colon, Trai Essex, Tony Hills, Ramon Foster, Kraig Urbik, A.Q. Shipley. Just a hunch here between Foster and Capizzi, but they won't want to risk putting Foster on the practice squad.

DL (7): Aaron Smith, Casey Hampton, Brett Keisel, Chris Hoke, Ziggy Hood, Travis Kirschke, Nick Eason. Again, no real surprises here.

LB (8): James Harrison, James Farrior, Lawrence Timmons, LaMarr Woodley, Bruce Davis, Patrick Bailey, Keyaron Fox, Donovan Woods. Woods is kind of the surprise here. I think he sticks because he can play inside, even though they currently list him as an outside guy. Bruce Davis needs to have a good camp. Bailey is a very good special teams player as is Fox. Fox will be the top backup inside.

DB (9): Ike Taylor, William Gay, Ryan Clark, Troy Polamalu, Deshea Townsend, Keiwan Ratliff, Joe Burnett, Keenan Lewis, Ryan Mundy. This is a tough position to call. I see Tyrone Carter as the odd man out right now, with Deshea Townsend making the move to a safety/corner position.

Specialists (3): Jeff Reed, Daniel Sepulveda, Greg Warren.

I would hate to lose Anthony Madison. I know he is just a one trick pony as a ST player, but he's pretty darned good at it.

I would also be surprised if Andre Frazier doesn't make the team. Behind Woodley and Harrison, there isn't much experience. We still are not sure what Davis can do. We may need Frazier from time to time this season.

Foster will need to have a really good camp to make the roster. Also I think Davis is gone. Summers will be the FB with McHugh and Stefen Logan makes the team

Something tells me Carter will stick around for one more year, mainly because I think it's pretty likely we'll relegate one or the other of the rookie CBs to the practice squad.

Last season seemed to be one of the better ones I can remember for Carter. We didn't really miss a beat when he was in there, which is more than I can say for him in years past. That will be important, plus I think we'll want a veteran available to start when Clark serves his one-game "suspension" against Denver.

QB (3): Ben Roethlisberger, Charlie Batch, Dennis Dixon. No explanation needed here. Agreed.

RB (5): Willie Parker, Mewelde Moore, Rashard Mendenhall, Frank Summers, Carey Davis. Davis makes it on his ability to play special teams. Carey I think is expendable, but they'll keep him anyway. Tomlin likes him, so...I'd rather keep Powdrell or even Justin Vincent, but Davis plays FB and RB

WR (5): Hines Ward, Santonio Holmes, Shaun McDonald, Limas Sweed, Mike Wallace. Sorry Dallas Baker. You're not making this club. McDonald beats out Brandon Williams. We actually have some depth here...hopefully some of these guys make a real push and challenge Wallace, Sweed, Nance for playing time in the preseason...it will make them all perform better.I still have it Ward, Santo, McD, Sweed on my 4 deep, though...

TE (3): Heath Miller, Matt Spaeth, Sean McHugh. No surprises here. David Johnson goes to the practice squad. Sounds right to me

Think Foster gets the axe here...

Frazier and Harrison always make the team...hard to bet against them. I think they bump Bailey and Woods.

Carter hangs, and one of these guys goes. Don't know who, though...
Specialists (3): Jeff Reed, Daniel Sepulveda, Greg Warren.

I pretty much agree with Revs. I dont think the Steelers will keep 7 D linemen and that roster spot will either go to the extra DB in Carter.....or another LB.

I would not exactly pencil Bailey in either. Have to remember that Woods beat him out last year in camp and Arnold Harrison will be back too. Fox, Woods, Davis, Harrison, Lewis, Ratliff, Mundy, Carter can all play special teams well. I think that Bailey gets cut unless he shows he is clearly the #4 OLB.

Madison over Carter and Lewis, at this point IMO, with Lewis staying on PS. I think they keep an extra cb and DeShea backs up at S. There will be some good camp battles at CB, LB, H-back and O-line.

Davis sets the bar at H-back at this point, let's hope Summers, Sherrod, Powdrell or Johnson shows better.

LB is going to be interesting, revs is right, Frazier and Harrison are tough to beat. I like Frazier to get a spot, and Woods on the inside. After that it should be interesting. I think they keep 9 LBs though and 9 O-line.
