Default Steelers notes: Shipley to throw out first pitch for Spikes

Steelers notes: Shipley to throw out first pitch for Spikes

PITTSBURGH — Next on A.Q. Shipley’s to-do list is throwing a baseball.

Shipley, the Steelers’ rookie center, will throw out the ceremonial first-pitch next Friday when the State College Spikes open their 2009 minor-league season. The Spikes are the Pittsburgh Pirates short-season Class A affiliate.

“I’m excited about it,” said Shipley, a Moon Area graduate who played college football at Penn Sate. “It’s an opportunity to get back to a place where I have so many wonderful memories and it’s a chance for me to get my name out there. It’s a nice little marketing opportunity.”

The Spikes’ home field is located just a few hundreds yards from Beaver Stadium, home of the Nittany Lions’ football team.

At Moon, Shipley was a two-sport star, playing football and basketball. But he does have a baseball history. He was catcher up until ninth grade when he decided to concentrate on just two sports.

BIG BEN AT BETHPAGE

Ben Roethlisberger was the most obvious no-show Thursday for the last of the voluntary organized team activities. But the star quarterback had a good excuse.

Roethlisberger was playing a practice round of golf at the Black Course at Bethpage State Park in Farmingdale, N.Y. That’s the site of next week’s U.S. Open.

Today, Roethlisberger plays in the U.S. Open Challenge. He’ll be joined at Bethpage by former NBA superstar Michael Jordan, pop singer/song writer Justin Timberlake and a by policemen from Phoenix in a made-or-TV, 18-hole stroke play event.

Highlights of the show will be televised June 21 before the fourth and final round of the U.S. Open.

HAT DAY

One of traditions of the Mike Tomlin era in Pittsburgh is hat day.

For the 14th and final OTA, the Steelers don’t have to wear helmets. They’re allowed to wear any kind of hat or cap of their choice.

Although most players wore some kind of any standard cap or no hat at all, a few got bold.

Tackle Willie Colon, for example, practiced with a sombrero.

Kicker Jeff Reed wore an orange construction helmet.

Linebacker James Harrison was one a handful of Steelers who wore tossel caps.

Wide receiver Hines Ward wore a replica leather helmet that NFL teams wore in the 1930s and ’40s.

X’S AND O’S

- Other prominent Steelers who missed the last OTA were defensive end Aaron Smith, nose tackle Casey Hampton and linebacker James Farrior.

Both starting safeties — Troy Polamalu and Ryan Clark — missed all of the voluntary OTAs. Polamalu was excused so he could work out on his own with a personal trainer in Southern California. Clark is recovering from off-season shoulder surgery.

Ward, who also had off-season shoulder injury, has attended most OTAs and participated in some individual drills. But for the most part, he’s been idle.

- Coach Mike Tomlin said emphatically that second-year pro Limas Sweed does not have the inside track on the No. 3 wide receiver spot.

When asked who else is in the mix, Tomlin said, “All the guys other than Hines Ward and Santonio Holmes.”

- Will the Steelers sign any more free agents before the start of training camp?

Or, is the roster set?

“More than anything right now, we are trying to focus on how to get our number down to 80, which of course is our training camp number,” Tomlin said. “We’re over it at this point. So it is more of a subtraction mentality than an addition mentality.”

The Steelers have 88 players on their roster.
