Default Steelers’ 6 Rings Reflect the Team, and the Times

Steelers’ 6 Rings Reflect the Team, and the Times
By HOLLY BRUBACH
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/06/11/sp...gewanted=print

PITTSBURGH — The Steelers’ first four rings, earned over six years beginning in 1974, are boxy and sculptural, in keeping with others of the time. They have large round diamonds to signify the number of Super Bowls and gold letters in relief against a black ground.

The idea behind the ring for Super Bowl IX, the Steelers’ first championship in the franchise’s 42-year history, was “to show dignity and our accomplishment,” Dan Rooney told a reporter in 1984. For their third title, he said, they responded to some of the players’ complaints that the first two rings were not showy enough and arranged three diamonds in the pattern of the starlike hypocycloids that form the Steelers’ logo, set against a pavé background.

The fourth time, they reverted to a simpler design, with four diamonds framed in a square, like dots on dice.

The scale of the Steelers’ fifth ring, in 2005, is fairly large, even by Super Bowl standards, but its design, with five diamond Lombardi trophies on a black ground, seems relatively sober compared to, say, the Colts’ blue horseshoe on a field of diamonds the following year.

While this new ring’s 63 diamonds totaling 3.61 carats weigh in under the record (jointly held by the Patriots and the Cowboys, tied at 5.0 carats), the new ring does surpass the Patriots’ for Super Bowl XXXIX in sheer size — if only by a millimeter. On defensive end Nick Eason, it stretches from knuckle to knuckle. “And I’ve got big hands,” he said.

A motion to switch to white gold this time was ultimately voted down as inconsistent with the black and gold team colors, despite the argument that white gold would look like steel. In the end, the diamonds were set in a white gold center to enhance their brilliance, with a yellow gold surround.

Unlike the Patriots’ latest ring, also in the shape of a football, the Steelers’ is framed by a double border rounded at the football’s points — a form that Charlie Anderson, Jostens’s designer, calls “more organic.”

PITTSBURGH STEELERS and WORLD CHAMPIONS bracket the top, carved in a variation on a serif font called Machine, a popular choice for Super Bowl rings. One shank features the year, the score, the Super Bowl logo and six Lombardi trophies rising out of Heinz Field — intended to signify bringing the victories home to the fans, according to Anderson.

The other is customized with a helmet, the N.F.L. shield, the player’s name and his number. Santonio Holmes’s ring has MVP engraved on the inside of the band.

5.0 carats for the CowTurds and the Cheatriots? Obviously a pathetic over compensation attempt for having small "tools".

"to show dignity" Now there is a word that will never be associated with either of the two teams mentioned above.

Do the Browns have any fans besides the player's immediate familes and the guys who sell the beer?

Six rings.

If I was a Steelers fan, I'd be happy about that. That's a helluva accomplishment.

Sometimes when you been around the block a bunch of times. The wise thing is bask in the glory you get and salute your rivals.

Then keep hoping you can keep doing it. Because someday you too may be the object of rival stompings.

Been on both sides many times. Winning with Class cannot be replaced no matter what happens. Great thing is Winning with Class tends to repeat.

Winning like a punk is a loser scenario

Which again, describes the (Jerry Jones) Cowboys and (especially) the Pats to a frigging tee.
