Default Tomlin puts a wrap on practices

Tomlin puts a wrap on practices

Mike Tomlin has mastered the art of talking but saying very little when it comes to the media.

The Steelers coach did make some noteworthy observations while meeting with reporters today following the team's final practice before training camp. Here are some of them:

Tomlin is loathe to evaluate players based on what they do in offseason practices but first-round pick Ziggy Hood apparently made an impression on him. Of the rookie defensive end from Missouri, Tomlin said, "The one thing that stood out about him is he's willing to and capable of running to the football. He covers a lot of ground for a big man. It's unique for his position."

Tomlin said it was "great" to see former Steelers linebacker Larry Foote earlier this week at the Super Bowl ring ceremony. He added that it will be more "dull" without the colorful and chatty Foote, who signed with the Lions last month, around this season.

But Tomlin said he doesn't expect a dropoff at right inside linebacker with Lawrence Timmons taking over for Foote. Tomlin stopped just short of saying Timmons will be an upgrade over Foote.

"Lawrence is a quality, quality football player," Tomlin said. "We expect him to play great to be frank with you."

Wide receiver Limas Sweed had, by all accounts, a good offseason. But that hasn't given him the inside track to the No. 3 wide receiver job that opened up when Nate Washington signed with the Titans, Tomlin said.

"Whoever can consistently provide a winning performance will play for us," Tomlin said.

Tomlin said it is not a foregone conclusion that veteran Charlie Batch will be the No. 2 quarterback to Ben Roethlisberger this season. Dennis Dixon, a fifth-round pick by the Steelers in 2008, will be given a chance to compete with Batch in training camp.

"Does he have the talent to have a horse in that race?" Tomlin said. "Absolutely."

Tomlin said it is unlikely that the Steelers will sign any veteran free agents prior to the start of training camp. The Steelers have almost 90 players on their roster and have to get that number to 80 before camp begins.

"It's more of a subtraction mentality than an addition mentality," Tomlin said of the roster.

Sounds like "ZIGGY" could see some playing time this year. The D-line could use him in the rotation and Hood could use the expierence.
