I'm just hoping that Wings fans don't have to suffer a situation similar to the Pens. Although one thing is for certain, no Jim Balsille or other businessman will be buying the team.

Red Wings wants new arena lease from city
Friday, 06.26.2009 / 11:11 AM / News
Associated Press

DETROIT (AP) -The Detroit Red Wings want a new deal to play at Joe Louis Arena.

The team says it will not exercise an option to renew its lease at the arena, but wants to continue talks with the city on a new deal. Ilitch Holdings Inc. President and Chief Executive Christopher Ilitch said Friday that the current lease is 30 years old and not competitive to other arena leases in the NHL or professional sports.

He says the team is looking for a new lease that is "fair and equitable for all parties."

The team had until next Tuesday to notify the city of its intentions before a 20-year option automatically kicked in.

Ilitch said the team will continue evaluating all options for a new arena.

oh, and just a side note about the wonderful city council in detroit.

Conyers pleads guilty to conspiracy

Detroit City Council President Pro Tem Monica Conyers pleaded guilty this morning to conspiring to commit bribery and is free on personal bond.

Conyers, the wife of powerful Democratic congressman U.S. Rep. John Conyers, appeared before Cohn to answer charges in connection with the wide-ranging probe of wrongdoing at Detroit city hall.

She has long been under suspicion in the Synagro Technologies bribery probe, not least because she had been a vocal opponent of the contract before suddenly switching her sentiments. She became the deciding voice in the city council’s 5-4 vote to approve the sludge-hauling deal in November 2007.

“This is not the beginning and it is certainly not the end, folks,” FBI Special Agent in Charge Andy Arena said at a news conference this morning.

No resignation letter has been submitted by Conyers to Detroit City Council as of this morning, according to the council clerk’s office, Council President Ken profanityfilterprofanityfilterprofanityfilterprofa nityfilterrel Jr.’s office and council’s legal office

If the council seriously wants to clean up their mess and get Detroit back on track, they must push Conyers to resign. If not, whoever she represents will have to vote her out.

they were talking about changing the voting for city council. i am not familiar with the rules on how long they can stay in office. i did read that the new mayor isnt asking for conyers resignation.. which is kind of stupid to me.. i knew she was corrupt, i never liked her. she always seemed c ocky to me.

You just don't deliver a city like this another blow by taking a beloved team from them! That'd be like the Steelers or Pirates leaving us in the 70s when the steel mills were closing (the Pens were too young to count into that mix). Having the Steelers and Pirates in town winning championships helped with the city's moral in so many ways!

I hate Red Wing fans............ but I don't want them screwed over like this!

i am sure Mr. I is going to do everything he can to keep the red wings in downtown. He is a detroit man, but he also has to do what makes good business sense to him too. the city is in need of money so bad, they will try and screw over anyone.

on a side note, monica conyers, resigned her council seat, now she is will be off to jail..lol..
