These two are easy for me (age being a factor starting right now)

Big Ben
Woodley

Both young and captains (assuming Woodley will eventually be one for us)

Big Ben and Polamalu. I don't even know what else there is to talk about.

I agree, Ben and Troy. I could build the rest of the team around those two.

Yea, Ben and Troy sounds good to me. Picking Woodley... I dont think is too smart. He's still young and he sure benefits a lot from having Harrison on the other side of him. You can't deny that, anyone in the world would. (except for someone better than Harrison)

Troy probably only has 3-4 good years left (could even be retired by then bc of concussions)...hard to build a team around that

Maybe true, but keep in mind he has only been a pro 2 years. For all we know, he could be the next james harrison. Im taking my chances and taking him, just my thinking...makes for a good debate anyways

I too would take Ben and Woodley.

I would love to take Troy, but the concussion issue keeps me from doing it.

The concussion issue is certainly a factor worth considering if you were to actually build an entire franchise around just two players, but every time Troy dons his black helmet and #43 jersey we are witnessing history ladies and gentlemen. All things remaining constant, Polamalu will be a first bid Hall of Famer and could be regarded as one of the best Strong Safeties to ever play the game.

With that said, I don't think Woodley is a bad selection either as he is young, had a breakout season last year, and has tremendous upside. He hit a bit of a wall last season as we entered the playoff stretch, but he set an NFL postseason record for consecutive multi-sack games.

Additionally, if we were just basing this off of the "What have you done for me lately" philosophy, then the obvious choice would be James Harrison. Yes, you read that right. Despite his age he does not have a lot of mileage and he is a fiery team leader and locker room presence (two consecutive Team MVP awards, reigning DPOY). Lamarr Woodley would not have had the season he had last year without Harrison's motivation and leadership, plus our entire defensive scheme is built around the OLBs.

Ultimately, a franchise should be built around leaders and people of character, so while Roethlisberger is the obvious choice on the offensive side of the ball (though using my logic and ignoring all other factors you could make a strong case for Hines Ward), an element of youth still needs to be on the side of the player.

So what's my final answer?

Ben Roethlisberger and James Harrison. Why Harrison? Because if I were building the Steelers from scratch, James Harrison's intangibles set the tone and the attitude for the entire team for at least a few more years. To me that's a more important ingredient to building a franchise the caliber of the Steelers than anything else. He may be gone in a few more years, but he'll leave a lasting legacy behind.
