Former Steelers' running backs Rocky Bleier and Franco Harris are planning a Sept. 11 fundraiser for the Flight 93 National Memorial.

They will hold a "9/11 We Will Never Forget" dinner at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh on Sept. 11.

The goal is for the $58 million, 2,200-acre memorial to open on Sept. 11, 2011, the 10th anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

Flight 93 was flying from Newark, N.J. to San Francisco. Investigators believe the hijackers wanted to crash into a Washington, D.C. target. The 40 people killed in the crash are recognized as heroes for storming the profanityfilterprofanityfilterprofanityfilterprofa nityfilterpit and preventing the attack.

The memorial will be built on the spot in western Pennsylvania where the plane crashed.

(Franco!!! Franco!!!, Rocky!!!, Rocky!!!. Let's Roll! I hope they post an online link for this so I can contribute a few bucks. - mesa)

What a wonderful cause spearheaded by two wonderful guys!

I'm with you, mesa - if anyone finds a link with info on how to donate, please post it. I'd like to donate a couple of bucks, as well, to this extremely worthy cause!

Bleier behind Heinz Field fundraiser to raise money for Flight 93 Memorial

By Rick Wills, TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Thursday, July 16, 2009

This Steelers season opens Sept. 10 with a home game against the Tennessee Titans — one day shy of the eighth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

"I thought about it for a while," said former Steelers running back Rocky Bleier, "and decided it would be great to have a dinner the next day to raise money for the Flight 93 Memorial near Shanksville."

After months of scrambling, the Sept. 11 dinner at Heinz Field is a go. It will include appearances by Gen. Tommy Franks, former Gov. Tom Ridge and country music singer Toby Keith.

"The whole idea of this is that we never forget the people on that flight and what they did for all of us," said Bleier, who received a Purple Heart for injuries during service in the Vietnam War after his rookie season with the Steelers in 1968.

The dinner is being held in coordination with two events that day — a golf outing with Steelers players that will support Golf Supports Our Troops, a charity that donates golf equipment to wounded veterans, and an auction that will support Soldiers Angels, a support organization for military employees that has the backing of another former Steelers running back, Franco Harris.

United Airlines Flight 93 was en route from Newark, N.J., to San Francisco when it was diverted by hijackers and crashed into an idled strip mine about four miles from tiny Shanksville in Somerset County. The official 9/11 Commission report said the hijackers crashed the plane while passengers tried to take control of the profanityfilterprofanityfilterprofanityfilterprofa nityfilterpit.

Forty passengers and crew died. The crash site became a national memorial in 2002.

Construction of the first phase of the $58.3 million flight memorial is scheduled to start in November and be competed two years later, on the 10th anniversary of the crash. A second phase of the project, which includes a visitors center, is planned.

"It takes its place along with the great battlefields like Gettysburg and Antietam. In many ways, it's where the first battle in the War on Terror was fought," said Joanne Hanley of the National Park Service, the memorial's manager.

The government will pay slightly less than half the cost for the memorial. The rest will come from private donations, said King Laughlin, campaign manager for the National Park Foundation's Flight 93 Memorial.

Since 9/11, about a million people have visited the site, often overwhelming the rural area's infrastructure.

"A million people visiting says there is a real mandate for building this memorial," Laughlin said.

One frequent visitor is Ken Nacke of Baltimore, who is in Somerset County about every three months. His brother, Louis Joseph Nacke II, or Joey, was on Flight 93.

"To our family, this is where Joey is," said Nacke, who says the Somerset area reminds of Olean, N.Y., where the brothers and two other siblings lived for much of their childhoods. "There could not really be a better place for him."

Nacke, who lived in Penn Hills as a child, will not attend the dinner at Heinz Field.

He and other motorcycle riders leave Newark on Sept. 3 for a ride to the California coastline that ends Sept. 11. They hope to raise about $300,000 for the memorial.

Individual tickets for the dinner are $793. For more information, visit www.honorflight93.org.
