Logan is Steelers' small wonder

By Mike Bires
Times Sports Staff

LATROBE —The Steelers plan to showcase the tiniest man on their roster.

Stefan Logan, just 5-foot-6 and 180 pounds, gets his chance to prove he can return kicks in the National Football League. He’s expected to be first up on kickoff and punt returns in the Steelers’ preseason game against Washington on Saturday.

“He can be electrifying when he has the football in his hands,” special teams coach Bob Ligashesky said.

Well, at least he was explosive last year in the Canadian Football League. He played well enough as a running back and return specialist for the British Columbia Lions that the Steelers signed him just a few days after winning Super Bowl XLIII.

“He’s a guy who distinguished himself in the CFL,” coach Mike Tomlin said. “You know that it is no secret that we are looking for guys who have some return capabilities. He fits that bill.”

Logan, who’s playing wide receiver right now in training camp, played only a few snaps in last week’s 20-10 preseason win over Arizona.

In that game, rookie wide receiver Mike Wallace was the deep man on kickoffs while rookie cornerback Joe Burnett returned punts.

Wallace only got to return one kickoff for 35 yards. Burnett returned two punts for 10 and 13 yards, respectively. On one of those punts, he fumbled after bumping into one of his teammates. The Steelers did recover that fumble.

At times, Logan has looked exciting as a kick returner at practice but now he gets his turn in a preseason game.

“Guys on the team told me, ‘We never saw you play before. But if they brought you here, evidently, they saw something they liked in you,’” Logan said.

Logan, who’s already 28 years old, has a fascinating background.

He’s a native of Miami, Fla., and played one year of high school football. He was suspended from the team for his role in a fight and had to spend a weekend in jail because of it. After high school, he quit playing football and worked in a morgue for two years.

“It sure was different working with a whole bunch of dead people,” he said. “But I got used to it.”

Then when he got the itch to play football again, he wound up at the University of South Dakota, then an NCAA Division II program. A four-year letterman for the Coyotes, he left USD as their all-time leading rusher.

In the spring of 2007, he was on the New York Giants’ minicamp roster before getting cut. Later that year, he spent time on the Miami Dolphins’ practice squad.

Then, it was off to Canada.

“It was different in Canada,” Logan said. “The field is longer and wider. They play with 12 men on a side instead of 11. All the running backs and receivers could be in motion at the same time. It’s crazy. But once you get the concept, it was fun.

“Still, it was the Canadian Football League. I wanted to be in the National Football League.”

Logan’s chances of making into the NFL with the Steelers aren’t that promising. At best, he’s the No. 9 receiver on the roster. His only chance of making the team is by making an impression as a return specialist.

“Things are going to work out,” he said.

He’ll find out Saturday.

How he fares against the Redskins will go a long way in determining if this little dynamo from the CFL has what it takes to play in the NFL.

I hope he does well. It would be great to have an electrifying returner on the team.

Logan looked impressive in practice last Saturday. You can clearly see his explosiveness as a 3rd down WR and returner.

One last crack at cutting the roster on Saturday for this kid.

If he shines, Tomlin has some awfully tough decisions to make.

He should grease up his arms with Coppertone to make himself more slippery. He better be fast and cagey because once the other teams catches him they are going to pound his 5'6" body into the grass.

I think he will be playing with alot of heart come Saturday. I hope he shows them what he can do. It would be nice to have a good return game.
