Default Finally, Steelers' Hood gets to chase Daniel

Finally, Steelers' Hood gets to chase Daniel

Ziggy Hood always had to exercise restraint when playing against Chase Daniel because quarterbacks were off limits as far as hitting during practice at the University of Missouri.

But now that they are no longer college teammates, Hood didn't have to hold back Saturday night. And the rookie defensive end sacked Daniel on consecutive plays in the fourth quarter of the Steelers' 17-13 loss to the Redskins at FedEx Field.

"Part of my dream was to get him," Hood said, "because I never could touch him at practice."

Hood has three sacks through two preseason games, and against the Redskins he also turned in a game-high three quarterback hurries. One change the first-round pick made from the first game to the second: He didn't break into a dance after either sack of Daniel.

Hood had gotten jokes from some teammates about how "ugly" his dance had been after he sacked Cardinals quarterback Brian St. Pierre on Aug. 13. Of his new approach, Hood said: "Get back to the huddle and do my job."

Getting the call

Rookie Mike Wallace got the nod at No. 3 wide receiver Saturday night instead of Limas Sweed, but coach Mike Tomlin said there was nothing to read into the move.

"We want to see him play with the big boys," Tomlin said of the third-round pick. "It's not a depth-chart thing at this point. Last time out, Sweed got that opportunity to be that third wideout. It was Mike's turn. We'll see who we choose next week."

Wallace caught two passes for 23 yards against the Redskins.

He is second on the Steelers in receptions (four) and third in receiving yards (58) through two preseason games.

Not playing smart

Penalties clearly irked Tomlin, and not just because the Steelers racked up 13 of them in a 17-13 loss to the Redskins on Saturday night at FedEx Field.

After an afternoon practice last week, Tomlin had said he planned to talk to his players about the importance of minimizing mental miscues.

The subject is almost surely to be addressed again today when the Steelers review film of the game at their South Side facility. That is especially true because they almost doubled the number of penalties (seven) they incurred in their first preseason game.

"We wanted to play smarter than our first time out," Tomlin said. "We did not get that accomplished. Not even close."

Getting his snaps

The right foot injury that quarterback Ben Roethlisberger sustained late last week provided backup Charlie Batch with his first extensive action since the end of the 2007 regular season.

Playing a little more than a quarter against the Redskins, Batch completed 5 of 14 passes for 63 yards. He directed a nine-play, 50-yard drive that Willie Parker capped with a 3-yard touchdown run.

"It was good for me to get an opportunity with the first-team offense," said Batch, who missed all of last season with a broken collarbone. "You can't simulate game speed when you're practicing. You just can't do it."

Shape up?

A successful fake punt by the Redskins early in the game forced the Steelers' defense back onto the field.

And starting nose tackle Casey Hampton, who is listed at 6-foot-1, 325 pounds, was admittedly gassed, an indication that he is not where he needs to be physically.

"After that, I was tired," Hampton said. "I need to get into shape."
