Default Steelers Batch impressed with rookie Mike Wallace

Steelers Batch impressed with rookie Mike Wallace

PITTSBURGH - When a quarterback is a fan, it means you've come into your own as a wide receiver.

Steelers rookie Mike Wallace has yet to grab a ball in a regular season game and still has a lot of learning ahead of him. But his efforts thus far, which include four receptions for 58 yards in two pre-season games have caught the eye of Pittsburgh back-up quarterback Charlie Batch.Mike Wallace

"Speed, Speed and more speed," Batch laughed when asked his thoughts on Wallace, but he was quick to add this fact.

"Mike Wallace is doing a great job, I think its something where he knows there is an opportunity out there to be gotten and he going out there and competing." Batch said.

Now in his11th year in the NFL, Batch has seen a number of good wideouts. Asked if there is one in particular that Wallace reminds him of - he didn't hesitate with his answer.

"He reminds of us a young Nate Washington because Nate was coming here raw,he was learning the position, learning how to play the NFL game," Batch said. "And you can see Mike has that, but having the experience of playing at a bigger college like Ole Miss he can now learn from a guy like Hines Ward and Santonio Holmes who can show him and teach him how to be a better receiver. That's what he needs to go with that speed."

Batch says Wallace still needs to improve his route running.

"You can't do everything at one speed at this level, I think that is something as he works with those guys and picks their brain and takes some things from them, add a little to his repertoire. it will be good."

Batch also believes facing the Steelers defense on a daily basis is going to elevate his game and make him better if he can do

"When you look at our defense it is probably the toughest you are going to get," Batch said. "And having an opportunity to face that day in and out is going to make him better Now whether he had to read a lot of coverages running routes in college, I don't know. But we have to do a lot of that out here and if he has to to be able to do that and to understand the hots and if he can do that, he gains the coaches trust and they put him out there to see how he can do in a game."
