Default Sweed showing progress for Steelers

Sweed showing progress for Steelers

PITTSBURGH - Limas Sweed was all smiles as he finished dressing at his locker following the Steelers' 17-0 shutout of the Buffalo Bills Saturday night at Heinz Field.

Sweed, a wide receiver, was starting his first game - albeit a preseason contest - in place of Santonio Holmes. He caught every pass thrown his way when he was out with the first unit and finished with four receptions for 34 yards.

The 6-4, 220-pound Sweed was targeted five times by quarterback Ben Roethlisberger in the first half, with just one ball thrown in Sweed's direction not going for a completion. On that play, Sweed made a leaping grab along the sideline, but was forced out of bounds by cornerback Leodis McKelvin before he could get both of his size 151/2 feet down in bounds.

That's right, Sweed wears a size 151/2 shoe.

"With those balls by the sidelines, you have to work on your footwork," said Sweed, a second-round draft pick in 2008. "If the guy would have been a second later, I would have been able to get it down. But he pushed my left leg out.

"That's a big adjustment for me, especially with my feet being so big. I can't just do what everybody else does. I have to drag my toe first. Every time I try to do the tap, my size 151/2 is always sticking, the toe is always sticking out of bounds."

Even without coming down with that pass, Sweed has taken a big step forward in this preseason - no pun intended.

"He has, along with those other second-year guys," said head coach Mike Tomlin. "That is the standard for those guys. We are looking for some other guys to join Sweed and (Rashard) Mendenhall in terms of providing some of the contributions they are providing.

"They have to make a big step for us and make plays for us. Limas is one that is doing that."

After a rookie season in which he had just six receptions for 64 yards and was better known for dropping passes than catching them, Sweed has settled in as the Steelers' No. 3 receiver behind Hines Ward and Holmes.

In three preseason games, he has seven receptions for 107 yards, a solid 15.3-yards-per-catch average.

Perhaps most impressively, three of those receptions have come on leaping catches over the middle, including one against the Bills that converted a third down into a first down.

On that play, Sweed leaped high into the air and reached back for the pass from Roethlisberger despite knowing that middle linebacker Paul Posluszny was waiting to smack him.

To Sweed, those kind of catches are just part of the game.

"I think coming out of a post and knowing that the safety is going to meet you head on (is the toughest catch to make)," he said, downplaying going over the middle. "I think that's one of the toughest catches to make and hold onto because the safety is coming downhill."

Sweed's preseason has made the Steelers feel a little better about their receiving corps, something that was a question mark after Nate Washington left as a free agent for Tennessee.

Washington had 40 receptions in 2008 working as the team's third receiver and Sweed is showing that he may be ready to fill that role.

"When I got a chance to make plays, I made them," Sweed said. "So when they turn the film on, they can't say that I didn't make the most of my opportunities. I made the best of it.

"It was a good night. Hines was doing his thing. The young guy, Mike (Wallace) was getting feel for it. The running backs were looking nice. Ben was looking nice. Everything was clicking. That was a good sign."

Odds and end zones

After being penalized 26 times in their first two preseason games, the Steelers had just six against Buffalo ... After connecting on 15 of 19 passes against Buffalo, Roethlisberger is completing 76 percent of his passes this preseason ... The Steelers have allowed just three preseason sacks ... The Steelers have to trim their roster to 75 players by 4 p.m. Tuesday. Final cutdowns to 53 players must be completed by 4 p.m. Saturday.

my 14 year old son wears 15 wide and basically we have to order and since we order we get 2 pairs. We make him wear a pair every other day. Yes i am hoping for a LT lol he is 14 years old strong as a ox 6"3' 260. On the flip side his brother is 5' 4" and half the weight and as mean as they come he plays safety and likes contact.
