Default Pat Kirwan's Pre-Season Goose Eggs

Where are the touchdown passes?

I hate seeing a goose egg on a quarterback's touchdown stat line during the preseason. Starting quarterbacks, especially in Week 3, should come out and orchestrate at least one drive that ends with a touchdown pass. Can you believe Ben Roethlisberger, Kurt Warner, Jason Campbell, Trent Edwards, Palmer and Shaun Hill have combined for 174 passes this summer, but not one touchdown pass? I know things will be better in the regular season, but it still isn't a nice stat to look at with the season nearly upon us.

That stat in Pre-season is nothing to worry about. Some teams want to work on running the ball in down inside the 20. Remember the Steelers were not that good last year punching it in with the run.

Actually, it was two seasons ago that the Steelers were not that good at punching it in.

In 2008 the Steelers had 16 rushing TD's.

In 2007 the Steelers had 9 rushing TD's.

In 2006 the Steelers had 16 rushing TD's.

In 2005 the Steelers had 21 rushing TD's.

In 2004 the Steelers had 16 rushing TD's.

In 2003 the Steelers had 10 rushing TD's.

In 2002 the Steelers had 15 rushing TD's.

In 2001 the Steelers had 17 rushing TD's.

In 2000 the Steelers had 19 rushing TD's.

By all Pittsburgh Steelers standards, 2008 was a very successful season in terms of punching the football into the endzone!

Jerome Bettis was way over-hyped as a goal-line RB. Sure he was a beast! But the Steelers really only had one "leap year" in terms of rushing TD's with Bettis ... it was 2005.

It just goes to show you how irrelevant preseason is for starters and guys who have locked up jobs. Preseason is now all about rookies and your second and third stringers or guys fighting for starting jobs. Winning in preseason may have never been too important but the last 10 years or even longer it is even less important. The older I get the harder it is to compare generations but I don't remember starters only playing 2 series or so when I was younger.

The Browns were passing on them pretty well. Hopefully the trend continues..

We need to bust out over the Titans and Chicago to start the season then we will be on a roll all season. The Ravens maybe Vikings will be the only real humps in the road...

typical sports writer panicking when things don't work out the way they understand/predict and thus resort to berating
