Default Steelers' Holmes to raise funds for sickle-cell research

Steelers' Holmes to raise funds for sickle-cell research
Friday, September 04, 2009
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Steelers wide receiver Santonio Holmes will be the host for a celebrity bowl-a-thon tomorrow to raise funds for sickle-cell disease research and to assist families that have been affected by the disease.

The event will benefit the III & Long Foundation, which Holmes established in March in honor of his son, Santonio III, who has sickle-cell disease.

Holmes, 25, learned in May that his son carries the sickle-cell trait.

"My 7-year-old is doing a lot better. It is almost to the point of being controllable. He has to take medication every day and probably will for the rest of his life," Holmes said.

"I know how expensive the medications and the hospital visits can be, so one of our goals in establishing the foundation is to assist families that have been affected by the disease along with helping in the research to find a cure for SCD."

Holmes is expected to be joined at the bowl-a-thon by some of his teammates and friends.

Events sponsored by Holmes and the Children's Sickle Cell Foundation tomorrow include the second annual Motor "Sickle" Ride and free SCD screenings from noon to 3 p.m. at the Schenley Park Vietnam Veterans Pavilion.

The III & Long Celebrity Bowl-A-Thon will take place immediately after at FunFest Entertainment Center, 2525 Freeport Road, Pittsburgh. Registration begins at 3:30 p.m. and bowling begins at 4.

LaMarr Woodley is pledging to donate $500 for every sack he records in the 2009 regular season to organizations serving disadvantaged children in Pittsburgh and Michigan.

In a program he is calling the Sack Attack, Woodley has chosen The Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Pennsylvania, Heroes for Kids, and All Stars Helping Kids as the charities that he will support through this program and the 2009 football season.

The $500 for each sack will be added to the $5,000 he has already committed to the program.

This weekend is the last opportunity for fans to snap photos of family and friends in front of the Steelers' six Super Bowl trophies.

The Lombardi trophies are on display during the annual Coors Light Kickoff and Rib Festival in the Coca-Cola Great Hall at Heinz Field from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. today, noon to 11 p.m. tomorrow and Sunday, and noon to 7 p.m. Monday.
