By Gerry Dulac, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Coach Mike Tomlin made it official today, announcing the names of the 22 players who were cut -- among them rookie running back Isaac Redman and linebacker Bruce Davis -- to get the Steelers to the mandated 53-man roster limit. As reported yesterday on the Post-Gazette web site, the most significant players cut by the Steelers were Redman, a training-camp sensation who led the team in scoring and rushing in the preseason; Davis, last year's No. 3 draft choice; running back Carey Davis, who started 11 games the past two seasons; linebacker Donovan Woods, cornerback Anthony Madison, defensive tackle Scott Paxson and two draft choices -- defensive end Sonny Harris (sixth round) and former Penn State center A.Q. Shipley (seventh). But also among the moves announced today by Tomlin was that tight end Sean McHugh, who had arthroscopic knee surgery last week, was placed on the injured reserve list and will miss the 2009 season. The Steelers had to get to the 53-man roster limit by 6 p.m. today. They did not make any trades, but they are in the market for a veteran offensive lineman and could claim one off waivers. The Steelers will try to re-sign several of those players to their eight-man practice squad, including Shipley, Redman and Harris, if they clear waivers. NFL teams have 24 hours to claim a player off waivers. Also released were quarterback Mike Reilly, running back Justin Vincent, kicker Piotr Czech, tackles Jeremy Parquet and Jason Capizzi, defensive tackle Steve McLendon, tight end Dezmond Sherrod, safety Roy Lewis , linebackers Andy Shantz and Tom Korte; and wide receivers Dallas Baker, Tyler Grisham and Brandon Williams. More details in tomorrow's Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. First published on September 5, 2009 at 4:35 pm Read more: http://www.postgazette.com/pg/09248/...#ixzz0QGjF0xD3 |
