Default Steelers: Cutdown analysis

Steelers: Cutdown analysis

Biggest surprise: Rookie free-agent tailback Isaac Redman did all he could to impress the Steelers this summer to make the 53-man roster. But the numbers game was too much as Pittsburgh already has three quality tailbacks in Willie Parker, Rashard Mendenhall and Mewelde Moore. The Steelers wonít hesitate to place Redman on their practice squad if no team claims him.

Recently released Carey Davis was the teamís starting fullback last year, so that also counts as a surprise. But Davis has been in the doghouse for Pittsburgh since last year, and with the arrival of rookie Frank ďThe TankĒ Summers, Davis became expendable.

No-brainers: Linebacker Bruce Davis was a third-round pick in 2008 with potential. But he didnít show much in more than a year in Pittsburgh, so the Steelers were tired of waiting for him to come around. This yearís seventh-round pick, A.Q. Shipley, came in with high hopes but struggled physically at the NFL level as most scouts projected. The Steelers might like to spend more time teaching Shipley the NFL game if he isnít claimed. Others like Justin Vincent, Scott Paxson and Donovan Woods were not surprises.

Whatís next: With starting guard Darnell Stapleton (knee) out for the year and on injured reserve, donít be surprised if the Steelers search the waiver wire for some depth on the offensive line. Thatís really the only glaring weakness Pittsburgh has entering the season. The center position behind starter Justin Hartwig is particularly thin now that both Stapleton and Shipley were taken off the active roster.

We will have more analysis Saturday as the rest of the AFC North makes its announcements.

Pittsburgh Steelers, Isaac Redman, WIllie Parker, Mewelde Moore, AFC North, A.Q. Shipley, Frank Summers, NFL draft, Rashard Mendenhall, Carey Davis, Bruce Davis, cutdown analysis

Too bad all the "expert reports" about Casey Hampton getting cut were false. I wanted to see how many yards we could give up to opposing teams.

I REALLY hope we can go up by 2 or 3 TDs on a few teams and then start playing our second stringers in the 4th quarter. There is no other way to give them the time they need without throwing them into the fire when the game is still being decided. No thanks!

I'd love to see what Dixon could do in a real game.

I would say you will see more of Dixon this year then last. I am not sure who got the no.2 quarterback job in Pittsburgh but I will say Dixon will get his share of looks this year.

Does anyone have a summary handy of how our 2009 Draftees fared vs. the cuts?

I think this is what you are asking for.

"The organization did its homework prior to the 2009 NFL Draft.

Seven of the nine picks the Steelers made in April survived a final cut that may have been the toughest in Mike Tomlin's three years as coach. Another rookie, guard Ramon Foster, made the Steelers as an undrafted free agent."

Oh I have no doubts that we'll get to see him. Last season he was a true rookie, which is why we went out of the way to make sure we got Leftwich. Had Batch got injured this season, I don't think we would have made the same move. In fact I'll go further in saying that if Batch didn't actually have starts that lead us to wins, I think Dixon could very well have won the #2 spot strictly based off of this preseason's performances.

[/Q

Although i did not predict he would be cut. We really did not see any difference when Hampton was out and Hoke played.
