Default Steelers' Willie Parker likely to get short-yardage nod

Steelers' Willie Parker likely to get short-yardage nod

The Steelers will enter the season without a designated short-yardage/goal-line back.

But a simple connecting of the dots makes it clear that Willie Parker will get most of the carries in those situations.

"I think we'll go with the guy that's in the ball game unless he's dead tired then we'll put a fresh body in," offensive coordinator Bruce Arians said Monday when asked who will be the goal-line back.

Parker is the starting running back and second-year man Rashard Mendenhall is No. 2 but the pair won't split carries. Coach Mike Tomlin said that last week and Arians reiterated it yesterday after practice.

"Willie's the man," Arians said.

Parker rushed for 11 touchdowns in 2006 but has just seven rushing touchdowns the last two seasons combined.

The two-time Pro Bowler will have a couple of new lead blockers this season.

Frank Summers will play the position Carey Davis held the previous two seasons. Fellow rookie David Johnson will serve as an H-back much like Sean McHugh did in 2008.

The Steelers don't have a traditional fullback on their roster but Arians didn't sound concerned about how the 5-10, 240-pound Summers, who played running back at UNLV, will do leading blocking in front of Parker.

"Take the ball out of his hand and you've got a fullback-type body, and he showed good explosion," Arians said of Summers, who rushed for over 1,600 yards in two seasons at UNLV. "He's actually showed more explosion without the ball than with it. He got lit up a couple of times running down the sidelines in training camp but take the ball out of his hands and everyone jumps out of the way."

The battle for the No. 3 wide receiver spot behind starters Hines Ward and Santonio Holmes had not been resolved -- and probably won't be.

Arians said both Limas Sweed and rookie Mike Wallace will serve as the No. 3 wideout at times.

"There are different packages for both those guys so there's not really a third guy; it depends on the package that they're in right now," Arians said. "It gives us some flexibility that way."

The Steelers will likely open the season dressing just four wide receivers with teams only allowed to activate 45 players for games.

Arians said he "would doubt it right now" that veteran Shaun McDonald will dress for games.

And in other news, Max Starks will play quarterback and Casey Hampton will kick field goals.

I mean, why not, as long as we're trying that hard to put guys where they're not effective.

Huh--Wallace and Sweed playing ahead of McDonald. I saw Sweed, but Wallace must have really impressed them--McDonald is a competent receiver.

I like Willie...but he is very ineffective when it comes to scoring touchdowns. More than a majority of his career touchdowns have come from him breaking a long run....not getting the ball in short yardage situations near the goal.

Then again, will Mendenhall be able to hold onto the ball in those situations? At least Parker doesn't fumble very often.

And this doesn't mean someone doesn't move into the role if he proves that he can do it.

Ok now i agree with you to an extent. You say he is not getting getting into the endzone on short yardage plays. Do you blame this on a small running back or an OL that doesn't hold their own load and don't create holes or even chances?

Called in the inactive thread that McDonald would not dress. Its not that he isn't a good NFL WR. The guy is solid and has produced in the NFL. I think the coaches are just so high on Sweed and Wallace that I think its wise to show confidence in these two young WR's and let them dress on gamedays.

Now if one of them proves they're not ready then we will see McDonald dress in a hurry or if Ward or Holmes go down then you would see the vet called upon to dress on gameday.

Shaun McDonald is a great insurance policy and when you're the defending Super Bowl champs you can just keep a proven vet WR around just for insurance.

I think to if Logan wouldn't have made the team then McDonald would have dressed.

its the o line that stops us in short yardage, not our running backs or opposing defenses, parker is a proven redzone runner albeit not the past couple years but hes got the skills, our o line needs to step up this year!!!

yep, it does not matter who runs the ball on goal line situation, the o-line has to do a better job to give the runners a chance to get in.

Maybe they could use the Tank on a few of them goal line runs. I just hope we don't have the same problem this year as we have had the last two or three years not being able to punch the ball into the endzone.

we shall see if the player management pro is flexible after a few looks at the goal line. the tank will block for parker. but the tank cant run with the ball his legs slow down when he carries the ball... i think its the extra 2 pound ball weight that kills his speed. And they will break Dixon in half if we try to use him...

i tend to lean towards the stubborn atttiude will lose mr. oc his job.... but wins save jobs...

but im just a fan... a TV watching.. beer drinkin QB.... lets play ball.
