Steelers' Homes ready to keep returning punts

Santonio Holmes isn't ready to cede all of the punt-returning duties to preseason sensation Stefan Logan just yet.

"I don't think anybody said I was not going to be returning punts this year," the Steelers wide receiver said. "That's not completely out of the picture."

Holmes said he would like to serve as a situational punt returner as he did last season.

He has averaged 8.2 yards on punt returns during his career. Holmes returned a punt 67 yards for a touchdown in the Steelers' 35-24 win over the San Diego Chargers in an AFC divisional playoff game last January.

"That's a part of my game," Holmes said of returning punts. "That's a part that gets me excited about going out every Sunday and playing in a game. I feel like I've got more control with the ball in my hands as a punt returner than I do just out there trying to catch passes."

The Steelers rounded out their practice squad Monday with the signing of cornerback Tuff Harris.

Harris played in six games for the Tennessee Titans last season and recorded eight tackles. The Steelers play the Titans Thursday in the first NFL game of the regular season.

The 6-foot, 198-pound Harris spent part of the 2007 season with the Miami Dolphins.

The Steelers waited an extra day to assemble their full practice squad because they had anticipated putting Sonny Harris on it. The Carolina Panthers, however, signed the rookie defensive end to their 53-man roster.

Digits

22 -- Players on roster that were on the last two Steelers teams that won the Super Bowl.

Tennessee coach Jeff Fisher said he explained the significance of the Terrible Towel to his players after a handful of them stomped on the iconic towels near the end of the Titans' 31-14 win over the Steelers last December.

So what did running back LenDale White do Sunday? He said he will do it again if given the opportunity Thursday when the Titans visit the Steelers.

"Sometimes when you come in here and you're doing a lot of talking you better be ready to back it up because our defense will be coming out there to play," outside linebacker LaMarr Woodley said Monday of White's comments.

Inside linebacker Lawrence Timmons (ankle) was the only player on the Steelers' 53-man roster that didn't practice yesterday because of an injury.

Timmons is no longer wearing a protective boot on his left foot but said he is not sure if he will play in the Steelers' 8:30 p.m. game Thursday night

"Just taking it day by day," said Timmons, who replaces Larry Foote in the starting lineup this season. "I'm feeling good. I've just been working hard, doing everything they say to get myself right."

Titans wide receiver Nate Washington (hamstring) and tight end Jared Cook (ankle) practiced on a limited basis yesterday.

Washington is hopeful that he'll be able to play against the Steelers, whom he suited up for from 2005-08.

Dan Rooney returned to the Steelers' practice facility yesterday and will be at the game Thursday night.

Rooney, who is now chairman emeritus of the Steelers, is living in Ireland and serving as a United States ambassador to that country.

Digits

8 -- Times Titans quarterback Kerry Collins was sacked in 16 regular-season games last season.

I checked the link... You would think a Pittsburgh paper would know how to spell Holmes right in the title?!?!

_______

I give it a 2-1 chance that we equal half that total this game.

He'll reach half that total Thursday Night.

I don't think Fisher is scared of us. He's just a really good coach who respects the history and traditions of the game. And I hope Holmes doesn't have to return one punt this season. It's just another way to get hurt.

I'd rather see Logan out there, Holmes should just focus 100% on being the best WR he can be.

Holmes just needs to work on his recieving and leave the returns for Logan we don't need Holmes getting an injury over a punt return.

Tomlin would be silly to even consider using Holmes for punt returns now that we have Stefan Logan. Logan is our returns game gem. Santonio needs to just worry about being the best WR possible. Let Logan take care of the punt and kickoff returns.

Hmm ... sounds like he might want to run that by Tomlin first. I'm willing to bet this is the first he's heard of it.
