Default Finishing what they start

Finishing what they start

September 21st, 2009
http://blog.triblive.com/view-from-t...at-they-start/

It is hard to find fault with a defense that has given up 27 points to a pair of opponents that have pretty good quarterbacks and backs that ranked among the top eight rushers in the NFL last season.

And there is a very good reason why the Steelers have merely been good instead of transcendent on defense so far this season: Troy Polamalu has missed six of eight quarters because of a sprained left knee.

All that said, it was a little surprising to see the Steelers’ defense fail to protect a fourth-quarter lead in a 17-14 loss to the Bears this past weekend. And it is pretty clear that they have to find a way to be more opportunistic even without one of their top playmakers.

That means not just getting to the quarterback, as James Farrior and LaMarr Woodley did numerous times against the Bears’ Jay Cutler, but also getting him on the ground.

The Steelers have just two sacks, which is five less than Cincinnati defensive end Antwan Odom has totaled in two games. And they have to improve in that department even though sacks are far from the only barometer of how well a team does of putting pressure on the quarterback – and disrupting an opponent’s passing game.

Woodley, himself, suggested this after reviewing film of the earliest loss the Steelers have suffered in Mike Tomlin’s three years as the team’s coach.

“It was disappointing on our end, not finishing,” Woodley said. “That was our mistake. There was just a few things here or there that we didn’t hit. The only thing you can do is correct the mistakes, move forward and get ready for Sunday.”

And what can the Steelers do to finish plays Sunday when they get to Cincinnati quarterback Carson Palmer?

“Wrapping up, taking better angles,” Woodley said. “I got in there a few times, but didn’t wrap (Cutler) up as good and allowing him, instead of getting a sack, he threw the ball away. It was an incomplete pass, but we could have set them back a little bit farther. James Farrior got in there a few times and missed a few opportunities. A lot of guys missed opportunities, where it was bad angles and he was able to move his feet a little bit and get away.”

If the players can get this mentality in their head why in the hell can't the fans?

Redemption comes in the form of a visit to Ohio. Palmer played well Sunday, but I'm placing the bet on a pissed off defense!

Bettis and Kreider used to "finish" games behind that O line.

But, this is the new Steelers.
