Default Steelers trying to explain how they’re 1-2

Steelers' inability to close troubling

That's two weeks, two blown leads in the fourth quarter for the Steelers, who are suddenly two games off the pace in the AFC North after falling 23-20 at Cincinnati on Sunday. Pittsburgh, which led for almost the entire game, squandered multiple chances to extend its margin. A key sequence came early in the third quarter with the Steelers holding a 13-9 lead. Steelers WR Limas Sweed, who has struggled to catch the ball throughout his career, dropped a TD pass in the endzone on third down, and PK Jeff Reed, who missed two field goals at Chicago last week, was wide left on a 52-yard field-goal attempt. Also, the Steelers' defense, like it did against the Bears, could not get a stop when it needed one in the fourth quarter, allowing the Bengals to rack up 156 yards and two TDs in their final two drives of the game.

"We have some work to do," Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said after the game. "We need to finish football games better. That’s the mark of a champion, and that’s not us at this point."

The PFW spin

With a little luck, the Steelers might well have a 3-0 record. If the Bears or Bengals make a few mistakes of their own in the final quarter, Pittsburgh might have escaped.

And there is still a lot to like about the Steelers. Overall, the defense remains one of AFC's better units, albeit not an elite one without SS Troy Polamalu, who has missed all but part of the first half of the Steelers' season opener with a knee injury. Pittsburgh is seventh in passing offense, and QB Ben Roethlisberger has been sharp, completing 71.6 percent of his throws.

That said, the Steelers aren't without some flaws. They have notched just five sacks in three games, and opposing passers have attacked the secondary with some success, particularly late in the game. Bengals QB Carson Palmer, stymied by Pittsburgh for much of the contest, hit his stride late, completing a pair of fourth-down throws and the game-winning four-yard TD pass on Cincinnati's last drive. The Chargers' offense will pose a major test for the Steelers' secondary, considering how Pittsburgh fared at the end of the loss to the Bengals.

However, it's a little early to panic over the Steelers. Reed, their normally reliable placekicker, is much better than any of the options available in free agency, so the Steelers have no choice but to be patient with him. The offense was potent on Sunday, rolling up 373 yards, though Roethlisberger had an interception returned for a touchdown. RB Willie Parker looked better than he had all season, gaining 93 yards on 25 carries and taking the sting out of Tomlin benching second-year back Rashard Mendenhall for not being "on the details this week."

But finding silver linings in defeat isn't a defending Super Bowl champion's thing. The Steelers are 1-2 for a reason, and another mistake-laden performance next week could put them in a surprisingly deep hole in the AFC North race.

It's a very quick and easy explanation as to why the Steelers are 1-2 thus far this season:

They've won ONE and lost two. Simple, no explanation needed.

Just fix it this week and move forward!

Lack of concentration and some players thinking they can get by on last year's reputation. The team is not playing like a team either. We have a bunch of talented individuals that are getting us nowhere.

Harrison and Woodley getting sacks and hits and pressures is the key to our defense even before Polamalu being there. He doesnt have the great year last year without 92 and 56 getting in the oppositions ass.

Not Finishing the GAME!

that is why they are 1-2. An 11 point lead...last time we lost with an 11 point lead was a long time ago...FINISH THE GAME!
