Hindsight is 20/20 but…
September 28th, 2009

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin is a master motivator but he makes some head-scratching decisions during games.

I still don’t understand why he would go for it near the end of the first half on fourth and 4 from the Bengals’ 35-yard line – this after not hesitating to go for a field goal after the Steelers had driven to the Bengals’ 1-yard line on their opening possession of the game.

The Steelers have not been able to close out games the last two weeks in part because they haven’t seized control of them when they had a chance.

Tomlin helped set the tone for last Sunday’s game by not going for it on fourth down from the 1-yard line. I know the Steelers have been anything but a good short-yardage offense but what kind of message does Tomlin send to his players by not going for it? And even if the Bengals make a stand they get the ball on their own 1-yard line. Say what you will about the Steelers’ defense but it has been stout in the first three quarters of game. And you have to think it would have forced a punt and given the offense the ball back in excellent field position.

The way the defense played in the first half against the Bengals – they had negative yards through the first 18 minutes of the game – made Tomlin’s decision near the end of the second quarter all the more mystifying.

Of his three options, he picked arguably the worst one.

Punter Daniel Sepulveda isn’t Mitch Berger. So, why not try to have him pin the Bengals deep in their own territory and assure that the Steelers go into halftime with no worse than a 13-point lead? Or why not let Jeff Reed attempt a 52-yard field goal? Had he made the kick it would have given the Steelers a 16-0 lead. Tomlin had said at his press conference the previous week that he still had the utmost confidence in Reed. He, in fact, seemed to take affront at a question about the veteran kicker’s psyche following two missed field goals in Chicago.

A 52-yard attempt is “on the outermost edge” of “comfortable field goal range” for an accomplished veteran such as Reed?

Tomlin seemed to send mixed messages during the Bengals game, and they didn’t help the Steelers any more than a defense that coughed up another fourth-quarter lead or an offense that didn’t maximize its opportunities at Paul Brown Stadium.

Steelers have a major issue with this 3rd and 1. They need to do something about this, it is getting ridiculous.

on 3rd and 1 now, i expect them to throw or bootleg, never to run, cuz they wont make it, now in the nfl, 3rd and 1 has been harder to get, but to fail EVERY time? its ridiculous
