Default Tomlin makes no excuses, says team intends to improve

Tomlin makes no excuses, says team intends to improve
September 29, 10:11 PM
Pittsburgh Sports Examiner
Matt Pawlikowski

PITTSBURGH - For the first time since he took the helm as coach of the Steelers, the team finds itself under the .500 mark.
While there is talk of the Steelers suffering the so called Super Bowl hangover, Tomlin dismissed that notion during his weekly press conference at the UPMC complex Tuesday afternoon.

I dont think its a lack of focus or a lack of attention on any of the parties involved, Tomlin said. I really think its a lack of production as coaches and football players. We have to get it fixed and get it fixed in a hurry. The story of the National Football League is finishing out football games and in order for us to be where we desire to be we have to do a better job than we are doing at this point.

He calls this week a big one, considering the team is coming off of two consecutive losses.

This is a big week for us coming off two important road losses, Tomlin said. Im not going to even make any excuses or explanations for the results of those games. Its often said and maybe too often in our business it is what it is. That being said, we are excited about what we can control, that being our preparation for our opponent.
Im excited about this week, we have a lot of work to do, were going to roll up our sleeves up and start this process and thats how you bounce back from sub-par performances or losses if you will, you simply get back to work.

Doing so wont be easy. The Chargers feature an explosive offensive attack with Phillip Rivers having a hot hand not to mention an emerging superstar in Vincent Jackson who is coming off back to back 100 yard receiving games.

We have a dangerous quarterback who is coming in here extremely hot, Tomlin said. He had over 300 yards two weeks ago and 400 yards, he has seven hundred yards the past few weeks. You like to slow those type of guys down.

Tomlin also talked about the two backs Darren Sproles and LaDainian Tomlinson.
In the backfield they have Tomlinson and Sproles, singularly they are tough to deal with, and together they are very dangerous, of course Sproles being very good out of the backfield on screens and third downs. And LT is LT.

One of the things that the Steelers have not done well lately according to Tomlin is situational football and detail.

Im not going to pretend they are going to fix themselves, he said. How you fix it is you go out and win football games, Tomlin said. And if we do that, this will become a distant miserable moment if you will. If we dont, it will continue again that is the story of the NFL.

As for injuries, Matt Spaeth has a hip pointer and Justin Hartwig has an ankle injury but Tomlin expects both to play. David Johnson has a high ankle injury and is questionable, Willie Parker has a turf toe and might be limited while Frank Summers has a back injury Tomlin called a mystery.

(Hmmm A back injury that is a "mystery". I'm not sure how to parse that one. - mesa)

I doubt we'll ever see Tomlin make excuses. That's not the kind of guy he is.

I can hear Tomlin say ............" we play the San Diego Chargers this week " . We have to come out and play Steeler football for 60 minutes . 60 plus if it needs be . We are not the champions for nothing .

Mike Tomlin's practices this week aren't going to be a whole lot of fun.

This ship will be righted. I have no doubt about that. This week is a must win, get us back to .500 again.

I have faith and confidence in this football team.

Congrats to the 2009 Stanley Cup Champion Pittsburgh Penguins
