Default Steelers notes: Polamalu will not play

Steelers notes: Polamalu will not play

PITTSBURGH — Despite two media reports that Troy Polamalu might play Sunday, that couldn’t be further from the truth.

One of the reports appeared in a Pittsburgh newspaper. The other was on ESPN with NFL reporter Adam Schefter making the claim.

But at 1 p.m. Thursday with his teammates on the practice field, Polamalu, the Steelers’ star strong safety, walked into the cafeteria at team headquarters with a noticeable limp. At 3:30, he walked out of the locker room with the same limp.

There is no way Polamalu, who suffered a sprained knee in the Sept. 10 opener against Tennessee, will play Sunday night against San Diego. There isn’t even a definitive date for when Polamalu will practice again.

When Polamalu was hurt, coach Mike Tomlin said Polamalu’s recovery time would be 3-to-6 weeks.

There is a chance Polamalu will play in the Oct. 11 away game against the Detroit Lions, but a more realistic date may be Oct. 18 when the Steelers host Cleveland.

Tyrone Carter has started in place of Polamalu the past two games, both Steeler losses. They may be a chance cornerback Deshea Townsend may start at strong safety against the Chargers.

“I don’t know. We’ll see,” said Townsend, who has taken plenty of snaps at safety at practice this week.

SWEED SPEAKS

On Wednesday, Limas Sweed chose not to speak to the media. But on Thursday, he agreed to address his dropped pass last Sunday and his subsequent demotion.

By dropping what should have been a 34-yard touchdown pass in the 23-20 loss in Cincinnati, Sweed has lost his spot as the Steelers’ No. 4 wideout. He won’t be in uniform Sunday.

Taking Sweed’s place will be veteran Shaun McDonald, who caught 79 passes two years ago when he played for Detroit.

“No excuses. I just have to make the plays,” Sweed said. “If you get open, you have to make the plays. It’s not rocket science. You just have to make the plays and be accountable.

“ When your number is called, you gotta make the plays. There’s not much else to be said about it.”

At practice, Sweed has been running with the scout-team offense.

MENDENHALL OR MOORE?

With Willie Parker hobbled with a turf toe injury, there’s a chance he won’t play against the Chargers.

Thursday after Parker missed his second straight practice, offensive coordinator Bruce Arians said either Rashard Mendenhall or Mewelde Moore could start at running back against the Chargers.

Mendenhall didn’t get any carries in Cincinnati because he practiced poorly last week. But Mendenhall said he’s practiced well the past two days, and Arians agreed.

Moore, meanwhile, said he’s ready to start if called upon.

“My job is to do whatever they ask me to do,” said Moore, the Steelers’ “third down” back who plays primarily on special teams. “I’m always ready.”

Moore started four games last year when Parker was injured and rushed for 99, 120, 84 and 57 yards, respectively.

A CHANCE FOR REDMAN?

Rookie running back Isaac Redman said there’s a chance he may be activated if Parker can’t play Sunday.

Redman, who played well in the preseason, was cut Sept. 4. A day later, he was assigned to the eight-man practice squad.

“The coaches just told me to be ready,” Redman said. “They told me to make sure I know the offense and to make sure I know the game plan for this week. I don’t know what’s going to happen. It could be a game-time decision.”

With Parker hurt, the Steelers only have three healthy running backs on their roster — Mendenhall, Moore and Carey Davis. A first-team fullback the past two years, Davis was cut Sept. 4 but re-signed Wednesday when rookie fullback Frank Summers was placed on injured reserve with a back injury.

Yikes.

This, more than anything, tells me we are probably going to see Redman on the real roster this season. Davis can't run the ball, and you never go into a game with only two healthy tailbacks. If it's not this week, it'll be as soon as Parker is out for 3-4 weeks with whatever lingering injury he develops this time.

I only wonder, though ... if they don't bring up Redman, could there be a possibility the door is open for Dookie again? AAAAGGGGGGHHH!

I wouldn't mind seeing what Townsend can do at safety. Deshea, has never been that physically gifted, but he is definitely a play maker, which the Steelers could use a bit of right about now. Also, I've always liked him and this could get him another year or two on the team if it works out.

I want to see Troy heal from his injuries before he tries to come back. It would be nice to have him Sunday night but I think it would be best if he waits.

Well as for Sweed I think everyone saw this one a coming. If you don't perform well and drop the easy ones then that will drop you out of the starting lineup. Maybe this will be a wake up call for him.

I hope to see Redman. He's not THE ANSWER but it couldn't hurt!

I would love to see what Townsend could do at the safety spot.
