Default Harrison not satisfied with performance despite three sacks

Harrison not satisfied with performance despite three sacks
October 13, 4:55 AMPittsburgh Sports Examiner
Matt Pawlikowski

PITTSBURGH - The Steelers still might duplicate their record from last year, and if they do they might owe a debt of gratitude to linebacker James Harrison.

Yes, football is a team sport and Harrison, the reigning NFL defensive player of the year will be the first to tell you that. But its hard to deny that his tenacity on the field against the Lions was a prime factor the Steelers sit at 3-2 and got that elusive road win.

"They couldn't block James," Steelers safety Ryan Clark, who suffered a stinger during the game but is OK, said after. "He was putting pressure on all day and that got Culpepper kind of antsy and that got them out of their game. They were running a lot of screens and running a lot of draws."

Harrison who recorded 16 sacks last season and had 8.5 sacks in 2007, had just three through the first four games. He came to life and had three against the Lions on Sunday, not to mention eight tackles, and a forced fumble.

In essence he was nightmare to Detroit's offensive line, which eventually changed things up on him as the game progressed, but still didn't matter.

"I felt like I had a match up I had the upper hand in," Harrison said. " Toward the second half they began to adjust and leave a back in to chip, so I had to do a bit of floor rushing to get tho the quarterback, but all in all I think we did a great job as a unit."

That unit, which had eight sacks entering the game, had seven sacks total on the day and Harrison, who defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau says never stops on any play, said it was the product of what LeBeau was able to concoct heading into the game.

"I think we did a really good job," Harrison said. " There were plays in there we let him contain and break and could have done better. Now it's just not about pressure, its being able to finish. Today coach LeBeau dialed up some great pressures and we as a unit were able to play some great defense."

Great though might be an understatement on the Lions final series. It was the type of ball champions are made of. The Lions had just mounted an 82-yard scoring play on its prior series and had momentum on their side. The only momentum they found after reaching the Steelers 21 was backward, as the defense got three consecutive sacks and a great breakup on desperation Hail Mary pass on fourth down.

"They did a tremendous job," Culpepper said of the Steelers' pass rush. "We knew that coming into this game they would do a great job of coming up with crazy and exotic blitzes and they would get on the quarterback fast."

The interesting thing is that while Harrison, who was an undrafted free-agent out of Kent State and a guy cut four times prior to taking over Joey Porter's slot as a starter in despite getting a win, wasn't happy with the way the defense performed.

"I'm not satisfied with the way we finished," Harrison said. " I'll be content with it for now, but we need to start finishing games better. We need to come in there and work on it."

Which brings up a scary thought, What happens when Harrison is content?

They need to start calling a few of the many holding calls everyone is getting away with. Culpepper's long run on 3rd and forever may not have happened if Detroit didn't get away with some jackass grabbing the bottom of Harrison's jersey and trying to give him a reverse wedgie after getting beat.

I have seen at least 2-3 bogus no calls every game this season. I guess since he's so good, they don't call holding in his favor so the other team stands a chance against Harrison.

As long as he saves a few for Lord Favre.

lol, people need to stop complaining about #92 getting held "a lot." All great pass rushers get held a lot. Good to see he's hungry. Our 3rd and long defense/2nd half defense needs work

true. Ware is also held a lot, but he doesn't have harrison's height, the reason he is held much more than other pass rushers

I expect a lot of holds to begin for elvis dumervil of denver if his hot streak continues

I can appreciate that he's not happy with the performance regardless of the outcome, but really I've heard this same song the last 5 weeks.

If you're that bothered by it, then I suggest you do something on the field. I understand it's difficult when the officials blantantly look past certain holding calls but we've always been a team not to lay our heads on that, and we've always overcome those things. Find a way to get it done again.
