What scares me for Troy is that he has had 7 concussions at a relatively young age. It probably will cause him to retire at a younger age as well.

ESPN Magazine did an in-depth story about Mike Webster a few years ago. It was almost upsetting to read.

edit: no, after starting to read it again, I have to correct myself. It wasn't almost upsetting -- it WAS upsetting.

The fourth one is probably the most upsetting, but also the one most worth reading. I'd definitely recommend it if you get the chance. My hat goes off to the guy who wrote all this for actually taking the time to understand it and do it right.

I think that really depends. Some guys are affected differently than others. Eric Lindros seemed to get several concussions a year for the first half of his career, but seemed to make it through OK. Steve Young quit a little early because of concussions and is doing just fine.

Honestly, I think the real problem is that Webster probably endured something like 50 or 100 concussions in the NFL -- most of which would have gone unnoticed -- and kept playing the next week regardless, probably even kept playing in the same game. It wasn't a big deal back then and it wasn't completely understood; you just got your ass kicked and got back up and kept playing unless you couldn't stand up. Medically, the worst thing that can possibly happen is if you have a concussion and aren't recovered, then you get hit in the head again -- that's how the really devastating damage is done.

These days the teams DO manage it a lot better -- getting knocked out is a big deal and they are a lot more careful (at least in theory) about making sure you're recovered before you come back. When a guy gets a concussion, you hear about it and everyone is aware and warned about it. The media is aware and raises questions and doesn't let it slide. Players are also multimillion-dollar investments that management wants to protect, so that aspect balances the temptation to work them to death. Now don't get me wrong, there's still probably a LOT of the yeah-yeah-macho-macho-macho sports culture working in the opposite direction, but at least people's eyes are on the problem now and they're moving in the right direction. Even though Goodell is making a mangled mess of it by trying to legislate injury out of the game, not limit the consequences down the road.
