Default Roethlisberger not happy with play in 27-14 win

Roethlisberger not happy with play in 27-14 win
October 19, 7:56 AMPittsburgh Sports Examiner

PITTSBURGH - Steeler quarterback Ben Roethlisberger had 417 yards in the air on Sunday. It was the third-highest total in Steelers history.

"I donít even think we know how good we can be here," Roethlisberger said. "Truth be told, I think we have to keep striving for excellence."

The ironic thing is that while Roethlisberger's tally on the day was just 17 yards shy of his career best, he still wasn't pleased with things and says there is plenty room for improvement, which is a scary thought, especially if you are an opponent.

"Myself, turning the ball over Ė I canít do it Ė and I have to complete more passes," Roethlisberger said. " I think we just have to do what we can do. Weíve got weapons at receiver, tight end, running back. We just have to do the things that we know we can do to win games."

Colon Cleansing II- It may have gone overlooked once again, but for a second week in a row Roethlisberger had the time to make plays because the offensive line did a great job of blocking the Browns. Steelers coach Mike Tomlin always said football games are won in the trenches - on Sunday against the Browns - Roethlisberger had so much time he could have dug a trench and laid new turf while waiting to find an open read down field.

"Yes we did do a great job back there, but you have to give credit to Santonio and Hines back there, "Colon said. "They were only rushing two and three at a time because of them, so anytime you get that kind of pressure you have to win the offensive line battle."

It's my Cribb - Although the rivalry has fizzled and Heinz Field has been a nightmare for the Browns, one player who continues to sizzle when it comes to playing the Steelers is Josh Cribbs, another former MAC quarteback, now wide out and kick return ace.

On Sunday, he had a 98 yard return for a touchdown and almost broke two others. It was Cribbs eighth career return for a touchdown and his third against the Steelers. With his touchdown, Cribbs set a Browns record with his eighth kickoff or punt return for a touchdown. He surpassed Eric Metcalf, who had seven.

"It is weird," Steelers linebacker Lawrence Timmons said. "Cribbs is so freaking fast. He got me a couple of times."

Cribbs was also highly active in the Wildcat scheme, which at times seemed to baffle the Steelers defense.

"Itís an aggressive defense," Cribbs said. "Aggressive defenses over-run things. Our coaches tried to get me the ball and make things happen.

Zebras Zzzzz again - With 17 seconds left in the half, Hines Ward makes a beautiful acrobatic catch for a touchdown. After further review it is ruled incomplete. Then at the end of the third quarter, he makes the announcement this is the end of the first quarter. There was also a first down call prior to Wards catch that was questionable, but not for the reasons many would think. A first down is to the end of the chains, not the rod- While the Steelers were given the first down, the ball didn't appear to reach the final chain. To complicate things even more, when Walt Anderson was asked about it, he spouted out a bunch of jibberish to the pool reporter but was clear about one thing. He made the right call.

Ward who has been a target, also seemed confused by the refs rulings on the field.

"The ruling that I thought was that you have to have control while youíre in the end zone. What the ref said was that you have to continue, no matter how many times you roll," Ward said. " On the second roll the ball hit my thigh and moved a little bit. I had complete control of the ball when I caught it in the end zone. The ruling is that you have to maintain control while youíre moving on the ground, so. I wish I would have got it. I wish they would have just given it to me. It was a good pitch and catch, unfortunately the ball moved on me.

HEARD YOU MISSED ME, I'M BAAACK. - Troy Polamalu may have had the defensive play of the game and although he was a tad bit slower, the defense seemed to be a little more fired up with him out on the field. His play in the first quarter though seemed to set the tone of the game both offensive and defensively when he intercepted Derek Anderson at the Steelers 13 yard line. On the next series the Steelers went on and scored.

" Having Troy, its definitely good to see him back," linebacker Lawrence Timmons said. "He's one of leaders and it was good to have him back out there."

After the game he was asked about his injury while standing around his locker and answering the hoards of media who flocked to him to discuss his first game back.

"I guess standing on it for long periods of time stinks," Polomalu said referring to all the questions. "But it felt a little better out there today."

FARRIER'S FOLLIES - Don't try telling linebacker James Farrior that the Browns game, despite the one sided affair the past 13 games is a meaningless game.

" It's very important. It's a divisional game," Farrior said. "As for the rivalry, its still there. the relationship is going to still be there, even though it is lopsided now its still an important game.

BIRD FLU? - The Browns Kameron Wimbley one of its top players this year on defense was a last minute scratch. While nothing official was stated, a few of the Browns players had said he had the H1N1 virus, which seems to be swooping over the Cleveland Sports teams. LeBron James, who is slated to play on Tuesday night at the Peterson Events Center is also reported to have the virus.

Living the high life - Yep, it was Miller time again on Sunday. Not only did tight end heath Miller score the Steelers first touchdown of the game, but once again whether it was blocking or becoming the open man, he was all over the football field and seemed to baffle the Browns inept defense. On the day, Miller had five receptions for 80 yards and a touchdown.

"I think the offense has always been there," Miller said after the game. "Like Iíve always said, the defense kind of dictates where the ball goes. I feel like Ben [Roethlisberger] spread the ball out to everybody today and everybody contributed."

QUOTABLE

You have to love defensive lineman Brett Keisel. One of the fun guys to talk to in the Steeler lockers after a game, Keisel had this to say about the remainder of the season.

"It's a marathon it's not a sprint, we just need to come in, keep working hard each week and get better," defensive lineman Brett Keisel said. " I think if we can stay humble that we will be alright

DUMB QUOTE OF THE DAY

And then there is this extreme. Everyone knows frustration comes with winning. Weíre not trying to lose every time we go out there," Browns quarterback Derek Anderson said. " We try to win. We put tons of hours in this week, and we felt good about the way it goes going into it. Itís frustrating not to get the results that we expect. "

We sure hope not DA, otherwise you'll give new meaning to the not so long in the word NFL.

INJURY UPDATE - It's a beautiful day in Mr. Tomlin's neighborhood at least when it comes to the injury front. According to the Steeler coach when it came to anyone having tweaks, he had this to say.

"Nothing of significance, Everyone that went. down in the game today came back into the game, I'm sure we'll have a minor list tomorrow but nothing as we sit here

He's probably refering to the fumble and interception. Guys like Ben will always find something to critique themselves on....lucky for us.
I love the fact that Ben is never satisfied with his or his teammates performance.

I wasn't satisfied with the offenses day. Over 400 yards passing and 500 yards of offense and only 27 points? Good enough to win but that game should have been over by the 3rd quarter against a terrible Cleveland team with the leagues worst run defense.

If they think they didn't play well, I'd also be scared as an opponent.

Scared of them getting better.
