Default Panel: Mammograms not necessary until after age 50

http://blogs.orlandosentinel.com/fea...oms+At+Work%29

A prestigious panel has issued what I consider shocking guidelines: Women of average cancer risk don't need to have mammograms until after age 50, and doctors should stop teaching women how to do self exams because there is no evidence they work.

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, which receives federal funding but is independent from the government, raises concerns that health insurers could use these revised guidelines to stop paying for mammograms. The task force is considered an authority on screening.

These recommendations scare me. Breast cancer is usually highly treatable -- if caught early. That may no longer be the case if these guidelines go into effect.

http://wdbo.com/localnews/2009/11/is...-of-ratio.html

I'm glad to see I'm not the only who sees this as an ominous sign.

SO for years, we have been fighting breast cancer, using self exams and early detection as a way to save lives....but now...now that there is a chance the Government is taking over Healthcare and that the Tax Payers will be paying for a large number of these tests...now...now its not as important?

So glad I'm not the only one raising an eyebrow on this nonsense.

Let the rationing begin.

I have a question. Who determines the cancer risk, and how? My wife's mother had breast cancer, don't know what age. Where would that put my wife?

The insurance companies and drug companies are the ones who will be taking over our health care system by way of lobbyists & huge handouts to politicians!!!! Who else falls under the power of these two entities?? Doctors!!!! When is anybody going to realize this?

And that's different than what's happening now? Insurance companies and drug companies already own our health care system, and both are part of the reason why health care is so expensive. Doctors have their hands tied as it is; they would be even more so if the Feds get their claws into the system. And as for the insurance companies, given all of the ridiculous penalties that are in the health care bills in Congress if you don't carry "minimum health insurance" - as determined by the Feds - the insurance companies eventually are going to wither away as more people go to the "public option," which is really what the government wants. The bottom line is that in the end, the people are going to get screwed, whether it's with high taxes and/or rationed health care.

No, X-T, I'm not saying that it's different, & agree that it's only going to get much worse. What frustrates me is that "we the people" are so powerless to do anything about it, it rarely gets mentioned. We just keep taking it up the behind from one administration to the other & just go along as things spiral out of control.

Heard this on Glenn Becks TV show tonight and it about made me puke. My wifes aunt died of breast cancer back in August and she was 48 when diagnosed. This is the beginning of the end my friends.

"New guidelines for cervical cancer screening say women should delay their first Pap test until age 21, and be screened less often than recommended in the past."

Stephanie Spielman (former Buckeye and NFL linebacker Chris Spielman's wife) just died of Breast Cancer. I believe they said on Mike N Mike that she was 42.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/200....ap/index.html

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- The wife of former NFL and Ohio State star Chris Spielman has died after a lengthy battle with cancer.

WBNS radio in Columbus, where Chris Spielman co-hosts a show, says 42-year-old Stefanie Spielman died Thursday at the family's home in Upper Arlington.

Stefanie Spielman was 30 years old and three months pregnant in 1998 when she detected a lump in her breast. She later miscarried and discovered she had cancer.

Chris Spielman was playing linebacker with the Buffalo Bills when he decided to give up football for a year to stay home with his wife and children. When his wife lost her hair because of chemotherapy treatments, he shaved his head.

The Spielmans became advocates for breast-cancer detection and research, winning several awards for their dedication to the cause.

Chris Spielman was a standout linebacker at Ohio State and a 10-year NFL veteran. He's currently a college football analyst at ESPN.
