Default Chiefs coach Haley not only a Pittsburgh guy, but a Steeler fan too

Chiefs coach Haley not only a Pittsburgh guy, but a Steeler fan too

There's a long history of coaching bloodlines when it comes to the Steelers, Marvin Lewis of the Bengals was just one case last week.

But when it comes to Todd Haley, the coach of the Kansas City Chiefs, who the Steelers meet up with on Sunday, it goes beyond the realm of coach.

That's right, unlike Lewis and many of the other NFL coaches or assistants who have walked through the doors of the Steeler organization; Haley not only respects the team as an opposing coach, but is truly a fan.

The reason? Haley attended Upper St. Clair High School in Pittsburgh, as a youth during the Steeler heydays, where he was a multi-sport standout, and worked for the organization.

"Without a doubt, my memories of the Steelers will never be taken away," Haley said. ďIt was a phenomenal time to grow up in Pittsburgh and then to actually have a connection to the Steelers through my father and me getting to work for them in a much lower capacity. Those are tremendous, tremendous memories."

Tremendous indeed, as he got to room across the hall from Terry Bradshaw and worked not only as a ball boy at camp, but also on the chain gang during all Steeler home games.

Haley's father Dick was legendary when it came to those great teams of the 1970's which won four Super Bowls. He was director of player personnel from 1971 to 1991 for the Steelers and laid the foundation for future success. His draft in 1974, which garnered Jack Lambert, Lynn Swann, John Stallworth and Lynn Swann -all future Hall of Famers - is without a doubt the greatest of all time.

It was where Haley got his start in football too, as he watched game films of players like Lambert with his father.

Steelers president Art Rooney II remembers Haley well from those days when his father Dick was with the team.

ďI remember Todd very well. I was fairly close to his father," Rooney said. "His father used to bring Todd to training camp. Todd would work as a ball boy for us during training camp. His dad would tell me that Todd wanted to grow up and be a professional baseball player, but somewhere along the line he decided to get into the football business.Ē

That's because Haley. unlike most NFL coaches didn't play football. Instead he was a golfer and baseball player. But football was in his bloodlines.

"To go to bowl games with him (his father) on a yearly basis, to go to training camp with him and do all of those things, I think there is some osmosis involved," Haley said earlier this year. "You are talking about someone who was great at what he did. I get paid to coach. I donít get paid to play. If playing were criteria to being a great coach, I think you would eliminate a lot of great coaches out of the Hall of Fame. Itís in my blood; itís part of my personality."

While this is Haley's first game against the Steelers as a head coach, itís not the first time he has met up with the team he idolized as a boy. Admittedly, in 2005, when Pittsburgh won its fifth Super Bowl he got caught up in the emotions.

ďThe year they went back to the Super Bowl a few years ago when they played Seattle they showed all the old [TV] clips," Haley said. "And my wife elbows me and says, Ďare you crying?í Theyíre great, great memories and there are still a lot of people there who mean a lot to me."

Last year, Haley was with Pittsburgh West, IE: The Arizona Cardinals, as its Offensive Coordinator. when they played the Steelers in the Super Bowl. It was something he said gave credence to the fact of how faithful Steeler fans are.

ďI know the Super Bowl was a surreal experience having to play of all the teams itís the Steelers," he said. " I had to fight with my friends because Steeler fans donít convert. Most of my other friends who are fans of other teams they convert to wherever I am. But my Steeler fans donít convert. They stay."

Recently the Chiefs released Larry Johnson, who also was a Steeler fan growing up and wanted to play for the Black and Gold. It made news last week. Haley made an interesting point about Johnson's comment of how Kansas City was too small of a market for him, showing once again why the Steelers front office is one of the best when it comes to evaluating players.

"Kansas City reminds me a little of Pittsburgh," Haley said. "The first day in here, it has a little feel. I go under the train tracks and I think of Midway, PA or Cecil or somewhere down in there. I donít know it has a Pittsburgh feel to me, a little less hilly but a good feel."

Well with his background he'll have enough sense to let his players disrespect the Terrible Towel.

So that's how Swann beat all those defenders and made such amazing catches. There were two of him!
