What disrepect.... Whether he is a Super Bowl opponent or not, you have to have respect to a legend like the Bus... Anybody that has had the skills or class that he has is deserving of every accolade... He is just jealous because the Bus' career has been more valuable and important that the 30 or some odd year history of the whole Seahawk franchise...

I don't think he's dissing the Bus as much as he is commenting on the cult of personality that has sprung up around Bettis and this game. Frankly, his popularity is more about his personality, loyalty, and the fervor of Steeler fans than just what he's accomplished on the field. (I know he's 5th alltime in yardage and a likely HOF guy.). He's a bigger-than-life guy. He is my all-time favorite college running back. Remember that TD against Michigan or MS where he was basically knocked out on his feet and still made it several yards across the goal line? None better.

The author makes the point about Walter Payton not getting the recognition due and other SB's ancedotes to offer perspective.

Ok, that said, let's acknowledge that the SB is going to see many different currents and story lines; some seemingly biased to one side or the other. It's just beginning...it's called the Super Bowl.

I rea your "Last Bus Stop" article, and it seems to me that you don't know much about Jerome "The Bus" Bettis. Let me give you some information on him.

Jerome is one of the classiest players in the NFL. In a day and age when players will jump ship to another team rather than take a diminished role, Jerome Bettis took a diminished role AND a paycut (something a player who will take a diminished role won't take) to stay with the Steelers. He embodies what it means to be a Pittsburgh Steeler. And he is not just a backup running back, he is a short yardage/goal line specialist. If the Steelers need a few yards to pick up a first down, give it to "The Bus". Need a touchdown at the goal line? Give it to "The Bus".

A big part of the reason he never lead the league in any offensive categories is because he plays on a team with a "grind it out" mentality. The Steelers build a lead, and then hand the ball off to eat up the clock. If they were more like the Colts, a "run up the score" team, then maybe he would have lead the league in touchdowns or yards a few times. But I bet if the NFL put out this statistic, he would lead the league in tough yards. The yards that come the hardest, when there is no hole and you have to make it yourself.

This Super Bowl may very well be Jerome Bettis' last game in the NFL. If it is,the NFL will be losing one hell of a person. If anybody deserves to go out on top, it is him. He will be a first-ballot Hall of Famer, not just a "probable" Hall of Famer as you called him. Also, the Hall of Fame doesn't just let anyone in, it's a very select group.

I'm glad you wrote this letter. You make great points. However, you miss the crux of his commentary (hell, why am I defending his intention? I'm a homer ) Anyway...

I lived in Chicago during the mid 80's and witnessed the Bears rise to SB champion. If there was a guy more deserving of the adulation than The Bus is receiving this week it was Walter. Yet, he didn't get the coverage. I think that is what Mcgrath tried to point out. His other point is that this is a team match not a Bettis love fest (Steeler fans the exception ). There is so much more to this game that will be floated, explored, examined, discected, analyzed. God, I love this.

If you really want to let it all hangout and really dis there is always the Blast Furnace. Hot, but fun...

What I meant by "no player more deserving" is no player in the game right now.I agree,Walter was very deserving of a SB Championship,and he got his.The bus hasn't gotten one yet.

Also,was he expected to retire after that Super Bowl?

I'm not trying to turn this into a smack thread or anything,but the author tried to make it sound like (at least IMHO) that the Bus wasn't deserving of the fanfare.
