Years ago, Pittsburgh vs. Oakland was one of the nastiest rivalries in any pro sport. From 1972 to 1983, they met six times in the playoffs, including the ’75 and ’76 AFC Championship games. Overall, the Raiders have a 9-8 edge over the Steelers in the series. The Steelers are 4-4 against the Raiders in games played in Pittsburgh and 4-5 in Oakland. In the playoffs, they’re 3-3.

Ben Roethlisberger returns after missing last week’s overtime loss in Baltimore due to re-occurring headaches from a Nov. 22 concussion. The last time he played the Raiders (Oct. 29, 2006), Roethlisberger was coming off another concussion. The Steelers, the reigning Super Bowl champs, lost that day at Oakland, 20-13, as Roethlisberger threw four interceptions. Two of those picks were returned for touchdowns, including one for 100 yards. Roethlisberger practiced this week without headaches.

STEELERS Once again, the Steelers will be without SS Troy Polamalu, who’ll miss his seventh game this season as he continues to rehab from his second sprained knee. Polamalu missed four games earlier in the year. Now he’ll miss his third straight.

With Polamalu out, Tyrone Carter will again start. Also sitting out will be DE Travis Kirschke, who aggravated a torn calf muscle last week in Baltimore. Kirschke had missed three games before returning against the Ravens. Starting at left D-end again will be Nick Eason. LG Chris Kemoeatu returns today after missing the Baltimore game with a sprained knee.

RAIDERS Starting DE Greg Ellis probably won’t play due to a nagging knee injury. He’s listed as doubtful.

“This locker room is tight. We’re a close-knit group. Everybody is in it to win it. We’re all in it for the same thing. We’re just going to try to move forward.”

James Farrior

LB dispelling Hines Ward’s comments last Sunday that suggested the Steelers’ locker room had a 50/50 division in regards to Roethlisberger missing the Baltimore game with re-occurring concussion symptoms

Well then all I ask is that this team plays like it wants to win today. Stop talking about doing things and just perform on the field. LET'S GO STEELERS!!!!!!
