Default Best Steeler defenses since the 1970's

Ok, well I think we need to try to get our minds off of all of the crap that has been happening recently.

So, in this thread I would like to discuss what everyone thinks are the best defenses since the beginning of the Cowher era, until now.

I think its a forgone conclussion of the greatness of last year's defense.

However, what about some of the other ones?

I think its fair to rank the other two Superbowl defenses right up there (which would be both the 2005 defense and the 1995 defense), since those two were Superbowl teams.

Besides our 3 Superbowl defenses, I would say the unit that sticks out for me the most is the 1994 defense (the year we lost to the Chargers in the AFC title game). I don't recall exact statistics. But I just remember that defense being incredibly dominant and also probably THE most brutal defense in terms of how hard and ferocious they hit. In some ways I feel that defense was maybe THE best defense we have had of the last 20 years. And because that team failed to make the Superbowl, they get overlooked alot.

Thoughts?

My votes would go to '08 and '95, with the '08 defense rivaling the '76 defense for honors as the greatest defense of all time.

Not Caper's 1994 defense over the 95 one? I do honestly think the 94 defense was better than the 95 edition.

the 2004 defence was awesome, much better than 2005 and 2007.

I agree with this. That sums it up. I would throw in 1994 as well.

1994, 1995, and 2008 were the best years to challenge that '76 team, with the 2008 defense was the best I'VE ever seen statistically being compared to '76. 2008, they were SO much fun to watch.

Very easy for me - the Steelers 1976 defense was the BEST Steelers D ever (imho).

'94 was pretty darn good too. Not taking anything away from it. I just give the edge to the '95 defense because it seemed a little better balanced.

Agree 100% with you HTG. I remember that 1976 defense. That was the greatest defense ever.

The 2008 defense doesn't hold a candle to that group. It's not even close.

Oh, I don't know. '76 certainly ranks up there, but I don't think it's fair to say that '08 doesn't hold a candle.

'76 Steelers/ '08 Steelers
Total yards allowed per game 237.4/237.2 (tie)
Passing yards allowed per game 133.3/156.9 (edge: Steel Curtain)
Rushing yards allowed per game 104.1/80.2 (edge: Renegade)
Points allowed per game 9.9/13.9 (edge: Steel Curtain)
Plus, the '08 defense carried their team all the way to the Superbowl against one of the toughest schedules in history. (edge: Renegade).

I'm not saying that the '08 defense was better than '76, but I'd hate to have to be the one to declare a winner.
