"Not taking anything away from the guys back in the 1970s, but this is a new group, a new time."
The Steelers have not won a Super Bowl in 26 years, losing in their only appearance since then 10 years ago. They won four in six years, starting with the 1974 season. "I would say this probably compares to our first time, Super Bowl IX," Rooney said. "It's very similar, these young guys we have, just like the players then. It's really their turn, their time up. The kind of people they are, it's a close team, they've done things the hard way, although it probably worked out, home and away." So exactly where did he say this Steeler team is AS GOOD as the '74 Steelers? Its clear he was comparing the experience and the kind of people they are, not the quality of the team. |

3 to be 4......THANK YOU!!!
I've been reading all this stuff about Mr. Rooney comparing this team to '74...and saying theyre as good or better than the '74 team.....but when reading the quotes attributed to Mr. Rooney...I dont see it... More generated media hype...I hope this game gets here soon...the media sharks are getting really desperate

i might be a Patriot fan, but im also a FOOTBALL fan (as well as sports fan).
I grew up first in Connecticut until we moved to Massachusetts in 1972 when i was 10. So my first love was the Tarkenton NY Giants, then around 1975 i became i full fledged Patriots fan (around the time Grogan took over from Plunkett). But in the 70's since my team was usually eliminated by October and I hated the Cowboys, i needed a GOOD TEAM THAT WILL BE PLAYING WHEN MY TEAM IS ELIMINATED team to root for. I loved the 70's Steelers as that team, as well as the Vikings since Tarkenton went there. Plus being a Boston Bruins fan, i loved the Steelers uniforms. the only time in that stretch i didnt root hard for Pittsburgh was when they played the Patriots. So i'll always stand up for the 70's Steelers, especially when young, whipper snapper Steeler fans start comparing Cowher to Noll, Ward to Swann and Stallworth, and Bettis to Harris. If you werent there guys, you dont know how good that team was. I'll alaways be a Patriot fan first, but i'll never deny the historical pecking order as being #1 70s Steelers #2 80's 49ers #3 60's Packers #4 00's Patriots |

I too was from CT and hail from "back in the day." I stand strong with 3 to be 4 on his evalution ~ except for that part about not rooting hard for our guys against the Pats ... but nobody perfect, right? lol
This is THE team and THIS is our year. Let's go Steelers, let's go! |
