Steelers return with miserable feelings

By Scott Brown
PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Tuesday, December 15, 2009

The Steelers returned to work Monday following a three-day break, but the locker room wasn't exactly upbeat. "Everybody's miserable around here," starting left guard Chris Kemoeatu said. "We just need a win."

The 6-7 Steelers will try to snap a five-game losing streak Sunday against the visiting Green Bay Packers. The Packers have won five games in a row.

Of the possible doubt that has cropped up among the Steelers in the midst of their swoon, inside linebacker James Farrior said, "We're doing everything we can to fight it because we've got to go out and play these next three games and not have anybody doubting that we can win these games. We definitely have the athletes in here that can do it. We've proven it in the past. We've just got to go out and prove it again."

Offensive tackle Max Starks has been named the Steelers' 2009 Walter Payton Man of the Year.
The award is named after the late Chicago Bears running back, and it recognizes on-the-field performance as well as community service. Starks, the Steelers' starting left tackle, is eligible for the NFL Walter Payton Man of the Year award, which will be announced the week of this year's Super Bowl. Starks is active in a number of causes, including raising money and awareness for breast cancer, child literacy and education. He also works with children who are grieving over the loss of a loved one and annually hosts a Thanksgiving dinner for those in need.

Safety Ryan Mundy is appealing the $10,000 fine he received from the NFL for a hit on Oakland wide receiver Johnnie Lee Higgins in a Dec. 6 game.

Mundy was penalized for unnecessary roughness after officials said he initiated helmet-to-helmet contact with Higgins.

Misery loves company and in a locker room, can be quite infectious. Snap yourselves out of it guys, practice hard, play hard on Sunday and get 'r done.

Congrats to Max!

I feel for the guys because I have a hard time believing that most of them are not giving it 100%. Next year, I believe that we will be back.

Ditto all the way around, particuarly the part about Max. He's a great guy, and despite this last game he's a genuine assett to the team.
