Default 3 Stats that REALLY Matter

Why is everyone going so crazy about the offensive stats? 4000 yard passer, 5000 yard passer, who the f*** cares. That is the worst way to make a point ever. You should really only ever look at three things.

Defense Ranked 12th in the NFL with giving up 23 points per game.
Offense Ranked 12th in the NFL with getting 20.2 points per game.
Record 9-7 Season Over

Those are the only statistics that matter. Alot of people are talking about Lebeau and Arians and screaming about who's at fault and why one should be more at fault than the other. So here is the questions I think people need to ask themselves....

Did the defense over or under perform? IMO they under performed but there is no one in the NFL I would put as defensive coordinator over Lebeau. I think they under performed because of injuries and a disappointing transition to a new cornerback.

Did the offense over or under perform? IMO they under performed for the talent they have on the team. I think they under performed because of play calling and strategy. I mean honestly who throws the ball all day in 40 mph winds? My 8 year old nephews are smarter than that.

You will not find a post where I say Lebeau did a bad job, but if we are posting stats here are some more. Take the last three games our offense scored an avg. of 30 points a game while the defense gave up 26.7 so in essence the more we scored the more the defense gave up. The most telling stat is that our defense ranked 28th and 29th in the league in opponents 3rd down conversions percentage and the number of third down conversions allowed per game. A very telling stat indeed in that when the defense needs to rise to the challenge most by getting your opponents offense off the field we failed. BTW the argument that the defense spent to much time on the field holds no water as the Steelers offense ranked 5th in the league in TOP.

Now to be fair we did not reap the points we should have for the amount of yardage amassed and I hope this is addressed. But to also be fair the Defense should not be given a free pass on their play this past year. I have maintained that this team failed in many if not all aspects of the game this season, thus the 9-7 record. To find fault with the Offense is okay as long as we see the entire work for what it is.

Our defense really was a lot better than that at preventing opponents from scoring. Opponents were getting about 4-5 of those points from return TDs on kickoffs and interceptions.

The third-down ranking was the most telling. Part of that comes from underperforming, but part of it, IMO, was from laying back and playing plain vanilla defense instead of being aggressive and challenging the opponent. We did that all year, and that's why the defense had a great big target on our belly that the opponent could fire away at whenever they needed to.

9-7 does not mean a season is over, look at the 2008 cardinals. they went 9-7.

Your record doesn't matter as long as you dominate your division

the steelers of 2008 were 6-4 out of their division.

The Steelers were 7-3 outside the division. That's why the playoff field ought to be grateful they didn't make it to the playoffs.
