Default Scouts Inc. on Steelers' draft

Scouts Inc. on Steelers' draft
January, 11, 2010

By James Walker

The Pittsburgh Steelers have the No. 18 overall pick in the 2010 draft, which is their highest slot in three years.

On Monday the AFC North blog caught up with Matt Williamson of Scouts Inc. to get an early feel for Pittsburgh's needs in the first round.

Matt, the Steelers don't pick in the teens often. Do you think this is their chance to land an impact player who can help right away next season?

Matt Williamson: The Steelers don't miss often in the first round no matter what. They're pretty solid in that regard. They've have some issues in the second round at times. But I think they need to find an impact defensive back. That has to be priority No. 1. I don't know exactly what's going to be there yet at No. 18. We will have to see what juniors will declare.

What do you think about the cornerbacks in particular?

Williamson: If you look at all their corners right now, Ike Taylor, Deshea Townsend, the two guys they just drafted, they're all mid-round guys. None of them came into the league with a huge pedigree or blow-you-away athleticism and natural skills. If they can add a first-rounder it might go a long way.

Do the Steelers have enough confidence in 2009 draft picks Joe Burnett or Keenan Lewis to make strides and fill a big role next season?

Williamson: I can see one of those guys being a solid No. 3. That's sort of been their formula with these mid-round guys. Ike Taylor gave them nothing as a rookie. William Gay was a nickelback and did a nice job. But when he became a starter he struggled. So I think they want to bring in corners in the middle rounds, have them play special teams and earn their way, and then insert them in the lineup in year two or three.

That formula can still hold true with Lewis and Burnett. I liked both players coming out of school, and I haven't seen enough of them to say they're not going to be able to help at this level. I think the jury is still out. But it's obvious, too, that neither has the pedigree or the ability to be a No. 1 corner. The ideal situation is to make Ike Taylor your No. 2 corner and bring in a No. 1-type corner. Then you’re really talking. The rest can play nickel and dime positions.

Disagree....if you bring in a Haden, he's still #2. Ike had to patch up Gay's shoddy work.

But it'll cost us to move up.

Well weather the cost is worth it or not will depend how much time Tomlin and the FO think we need to rebuild team. Is this team one player away from championship play or will it take more than one?

I have no opinion on Haden, but it's the safety's job to pick up the CB's slack. Ike has his own issues but Gay's lack of performance kept the spot light off him. Ike has his moments of brilliance, but he's inconsistent and I love the idea of him being our #2.

18 th pick - 900....50 th - 400
10th pick - 1300

it would take the 1st and 2nd rd picks to move up to # 10

neither do i... and with the number of holes that needs filled, it would be stupid to use multiple picks on one player.... plus haden could end up going inside the top 10 ...the browns certainly could use a corner.....donovan warren is a much more realistic cb option.

1st and 2nd is exactly what I was thinking...Haden is a monster, a true cover corner, and could start immediately and be a HUGE upgrade over Gay.

Ike was forced to play WAY too much zone this year, and HE had to depend on safety (and Gay's) help, and it's no secret that Carter was a pretty big liability back there. We get a healthy Troy back, sign Clark (one way or the other, he's going to be one of the most important signings to this team next year), drop in an NFL-ready CB across from Ike so he can get back on HIS game, and our secondary goes from being a horrific problem area that literally loses us games to be being one of the strongest area's of the team.

Arguably, we lost 4 games this year due to poor secondary play, perhaps more. That's worth a 2nd round pick in my book.

I would rather not draft Haden, we can get Earl Thomas and get someone has good as Haden possibly even better with Janoris Jenkins next year and he wont be a top 10 pick.

oh cut the crap on Ike heavily overrated he's only viewed as good becuase he's fortunate enough to have Polamalu behind him.

Ike overrated overrated he had more than a pro bowl season this year i assure u of that. Gay wasn't there in 2006, yet he was benched in favor on Colclough please tell me why, your ike taylor excuses are just bullshit.

Jesus Christ, the board IQ has dropped precipitously over the last 9 months.

I need a break. Carry on...
