Default The Bengals Have Gone 19 yrs Without A Playoff Victory

Article:

Coach Marvin Lewis apologized for failing to get the Cincinnati Bengals a playoff win.

The Bengals have gone 19 years without a playoff victory, dropping their latest chance on Saturday. A 24-14 loss to the New York Jets at Paul Brown Stadium put a downcast ending on a season that included numerous breakthroughs on their way to the AFC North title.

Lewis has led them to both of their playoff games since 1991 — they also went in 2005 as division champs and lost at home in the opening round.

"I do need to apologize that I haven't gotten us over the hump, and I haven't gotten us beyond where we've been," Lewis said Monday at his end-of-the-season news conference. "That's my job and my focus to get us beyond that. And we'll get started on that very quickly."

The Bengals went 6-0 in division games for the first time in their history, using a new philosophy on offense. Instead of letting Carson Palmer (FSY) throw a lot, they turned to a run-first offense that worked in tandem with a stingy, young defense.

Cincinnati's defense faded at the end, hampered by injuries to some of its top run defenders, but finished the regular season ranked fourth in yards allowed — their highest ranking 1983, when they finished first. Defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer's contract expires at the end of this season.

Asked whether he's confident the Bengals will keep Zimmer, Lewis said, "I'm very confident."

Lewis arrived in Cincinnati before the 2003 season and has led the Bengals to their only two winning records since 1991. After Cincinnati's brief playoff appearance in 2005, Lewis got his contract extended two years through the 2010 season.

Lewis expects to talk to owner Mike Brown (FSY) about his contract at some point.

"I would imagine (Brown) and I would talk," Lewis said. "I have no timeframe of when we would talk."

Cincinnati's biggest challenge in the offseason will be improving a passing game that fell off dramatically.

The Bengals lost top receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh (FSY) to free agency after last season. Receiver Chris Henry (FSY) broke his arm, then died during a domestic dispute last month. Chad Ochocinco (FSY) rebounded from a subpar 2008 season, but no one else was consistent among the receivers.

Cincinnati lacks a dynamic pass receiver out of the backfield. Both of its starting tight ends —Reggie Kelly (FSY) and Ben Utecht (FSY)— had their seasons end during training camp due to injuries.

Lewis doesn't plan to change the offense's run-first identity to try to restore the passing game.

"I think we need to keep putting pieces around our quarterback to enable him to utilize all the abilities and skills that he has," Lewis said. "We've gotten some things established. We know that we have the maturity level that he has, with how to play the game. Now we have to give him the best tool belt we can to put around him and get things done."

The Bengals revamped the offensive line in the offseason — right guard Bobbie Williams (FSY) was the only player in the same spot — and developed one of the league's top running games.

"I think we've established a strong foundation," Lewis said. "We've really kind of screwed down some pillars into the sand, which is a good thing as we move forward. Now we have an opportunity to build upon that and continue to tweak the kind of things we have to do offensively."

Doesn't this article belong in the 1492 thread? LMAO!

This isn't Lewis' fault. This is Palmer, Johnson (ocho stinko), and the defenses fault. The players failed to show up on Sunday. They played as if the jets were going to lay down and when they jumped up and punched them in the face in the first half, the bungals didn't know how to react. They beat the Steelers, not once, twice and that was their season in a nutshell. To them, and to some fans, that was all they needed for a successful season.

Now they've learned there is so much more to a season than just the AFCN and beating the Steelers (and the ravens for that matter), too bad for them they'll struggle next year to break .500!

I can see the Bengals drafting a WR in the 1st and a G/C in the 2nd to improve their offense. They have a solid young defense, but they are still the Bungles.

Honestly, this year the Bengals were more like a 7-9 or 6-10 team, except they got hot early and also benefited because we became the world's biggest choke artists. They finished losing something like 5 out of their last 6 with their only wins in the second half of the season against the Chiefs, Lions and Browns. That's just horrid, and I don't think the fact that Thug Life decided to off himself doing a Teen Wolf impression had much to do with it.

Next year, I fully expect them to be squarely back in the cellar where they belong, and if Palmer gets hurt again, it's straight to 4-12.

Too bad for them.

Now watch as they fall back into crappiness next season. With the regression of Palmer, a first place schedule, and the closeness and harsh competition of the AFC North, it doesn't look good for the Bengals in 2010. Even the Browns have become competant and may finally jump out of the cellar.
