Tag, who will be it?

February 5th, 2010

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — It is looking increasingly likely that no collective bargaining agreement (CBA) will be reached between the NFL players and owners prior to March 1.

Barring an unforeseen breakthrough in negotiations — NFL Players Association president Kevin Mawae said Thursday they are “moving at a snail’s pace” — the Steelers will have a franchise and transition tag at their disposal or two transition tags when dealing with their own unrestricted free agents.

As clear as nose tackle Casey Hampton has made it that he doesn’t want the franchise tag placed on him, that makes the most sense for the Steelers.

They can’t let Hampton leave since there is no one on the roster to replace him — and since they can’t depend on finding a nose tackle in the draft to plug in at one of the most important positions on a 3-4 defense.

Time is running short on Hampton and the Steelers getting a long-term contact done as the deadline to franchise players is Feb. 25. The Steelers may tag the five-time Pro Bowler just to buy more time, something they did successfully with left tackle Max Starks last season.

With performance bonuses, Hampton made $6.45 million last season. If they franchise him, the Steelers would have to offer Hampton a one-year deal worth $7.7 million.

That is 120 percent of what he made in 2009 and is more than the average of the top five salaries ($7 million) pulled in by defensive tackles last season. Franchised players get whichever of the two is greater.

If the Steelers don't franchise Hampton, kicker Jeff Reed is the only other player they should seriously consider tagging.

Steelers could use a transition tag on free safety Ryan Clark, but they would have to offer him a one-year deal worth just over $6 million. That is the average of the top 10 salaries made by safeties in 2009.

The Steelers could tag Clark with the intention of getting a long-term deal done but if that doesn’t happen they would be overpaying him in 2010.

If the Steelers are unable to get a deal done with Reed before Feb. 25 — or March 1 when they would get a second tag if there is no new CBA — he is a prime candidate for a transition tag.

The $2.63 million they would have to offer Reed for one year is only slightly more than a $1 million increase over what they paid him last season. And they wouldn’t be overpaying him if the two sides could not come to terms on a long-term deal.

Reed was his usual steady self in 2009, making 27 of 31 field goals and converting every attempt inside of 50 yards after the second week of the season. He wants to stay in Pittsburgh, and the Steelers should oblige him — especially after watching kickers botch one field-goal attempt after another in the playoffs.

How many more threads are we going to have on this subject?

I appreciate you posting all of the articles you do, mesa, but in the future, please combine topics on the same subject with already existing threads. Thanks.

Don't necessarily know if tagging Big Snack is such a great idea, as he has clearly stated he would be opposed to the idea and thus, might pull a Faneca.

Definitely tag Reed if they can't come to terms before the deadline.
