Default Who form this team would have made the teams from the '70s?

It's a game I've been playing with some fan friends up here; most agree that there are a couple easy calls and a lot of tough ones. And you can kind of say (for example) that Hines Ward would beat out Randy Reutershan, but that's not the spirit of the game! who would play a SIGNIFIGANT part ot the team that won 4?

The easy ones:

Polamalu, of course. And Alan Faneca. All due respect to Kolb and Davis, Faneca is as tough as they come. Maybe you could make the case of players being better suited for trapping vs. drive blocking, but my opinion is that Faneca could do whatever you asked him to.

Tough calls:

The Curtain was a 4/3, the Steelers now play a 3/4. That gives you and extra linebacker, but makes it tough for a lineman to squeeze into Greene/Greenwood/White. So, let's play the 4/3 for linemen and the 3/4 for linebackers, and see who makes it.

Casey Hampton over Fats Holmes/John Banaszak... I'd give Hampton and Holmes a tossup, but pick Casey over Banaszak.

No one is getting picked over Ham and Lambert of course. But I'll take Joey Porter over Robin Cole. Would I take him over Andy Russell? Maybe.

Would I take Farrior over either of those two? Maybe.

Franco Harris, or Willie Parker? Harris all the way, but would you rather have Harris or The Bus in his prime? Oh man. How could you pick one over the other? I think it's fair to say that either player could replace the other. It's easy to forget how great Franco was, because he always looked so soft getting those hard yards. The guy was phenomenal.

Rocky Bleier or ??? Dan Kreider? Verron Haynes? Maybe Bus? I dunno, I'd figure that there weren't many guys as tough as Bleier. I mean, here's your blocking back getting between 500 and 1000 yards each year.

Brad or Ben? Ben has a ways to go yet. Does anyone remember, Bradshaw called his own plays? Those were the last of those days. Most plays were being sent in by the end of the '70s.

Heath Miller or Bennie Cunningham/Randy Grossman? I'll take the rookie, Miller, but I've always thought Bennie Cunningham was underrated. The guy awas a monster blocker who could catch. But I really believe in Heath Miller.

Where would Hines Ward fit in? Would he play ahead of Swann and Stallworth? Jeez. Swann made every catch over the middle that Hines has made. I'd have to say that you put him ahead of Frank Lewis and Theo Bell, and then we can argue over which two of the three (Ward, Swann, Stallworth) get the most catches.

OK, the floor is open for discussion!

Breaking it down by unit, IMO the following current Steelers would start on the '70s teams

Offensive line Faneca
Running backs & QB None (in their primes would take Harris over Bettis)
Wide receivers None
Tight End Miller over Grosssman/Larry Brown/Cunningham
Cunningham never the same after 3rd year injury - injuries
change everything

Defensive line Hampton & Holmes a toss-up/
Hampton over Dunn or Banaszak
Linebackers Porter over Cole/Porter-Russell a toss-up
Defensive backs Polamalu

l.c. greenwood said in a radio interview last week that polamalu could have made the team.....as a back up to wagner and blount, or was it shell? anyways i was suprised. those old steelers are really proud of eachother and wouldnt sell no one on their team short.

gardocki definitely and reed probably

Forgot about the kickers

Definitely Reed over Gerela, who was horrible

I have been watching DVDs of the full Super Bowl broadcasts I purchased on E-Bay and was reminded how Gerela constantly missed in IX, X, and XIII (a game in which Curt Gowdy said Gerela's accuracy was around 60% in 1978).

Matt Barr was an improvement but his leg strength was less than Reed's

Gardocki over Bobby Walden but Colquittt was another 2 step punter who was comparable to Gardocki - probably a wash there

Yeah, I forgot about Gerela. You know though, bad as he was he was still an improvement over previous Steelers kickers. I remember such luminaries as Gene Mingo (12/26 in '69, 5/18 in 1970) and Allan Watson (5/10 in 1970), and Booth Lustig, who used to kick paper cups to warm up (8 for 20 in 1968). Gerela was half decent until 1977; he hit 69% in '74 and 81% in '75.

Polumula over Wagner for sure.
Hines with Swann and Stallworth! Say what you want, Hines may end up being better than these two, as far as a career goes. But Swann and Stallworth were money, inthe Super Bowls.
Porter would fit, but Porter wouldn`t make our all time team!
Ike may even make this team. Blount is in for sure, and Shell, but J.T. Thomas????

J.T. Thomas was drafted to be a bump & run CB and was great in that role.

An illness in 1977 and rules changes did him in as a CB, but Blount & JT were an awesome tandem from 1974-76. IMO Ike Taylor might pass up JT at some point (and JT was surrounded by more talent) but not yet

I like the way the secondary has matured this year, there are some young guys who are going to be in the elite soon. You can see the hard work and determination paying off; these guys are smart.

First, it's very hard to compare different eras like this....But, I'd have to say that Polamalu and Reed are the only two that are hands down starters on those 70's teams....Nine Hall of Famers out of 22? Not too shabby!!!! That was the greatest dynasty of all time....The Hall of Fame rings prove it....Can the Patriots say that they will have NINE HOF'ers from their dynasty? No way in hell!!!!!
