Pittsburgh Steelers End of Season Review

Mike Tomlin and Kevin Colbert talk before the Opening Game against Tennnessee

Pittsburgh Steelers
The good:The much maligned Offensive line gave up just 30 sacks. For the first time in Pittsburgh Steelers history the Steelers had a 4000 yard passer, a 1000 yard rusher and a 1000 yard reciever. The Fifth Year Pro Ben Roethlisberger threw 27 touchdowns and just 13 interceptions. Rashard Mendenhall rushed for 1000 yards in his first season as a starter after the media heavily critisized him and labelling him a bust. The Steelers found a stud in the third round of the 2009 Draft in Mike Wallace after beating out Limas Sweed for the job in pre-season he caught 41 balls for 795 yards and 7 touchdowns with an average of 19.3 (led league for rookies).

The bad:The Steelers had the best offense but failed to win half of their games due to a porus 37.3% conversion rate on Third Downs. Rashard Mendenhall had ball security problems all year with fumbling the ball eleven times. The Steelers had a league tied low 10 interceptions. They also had one of the worst Redzone offenses in the entire league. The Special Teams Coverage department was poor all year long and it culminated with giving Ted Gin Jr a 65 yard touchdown punt return.

The ugly:
The league's fith-ranked defense was shredded by Opponents Quarterbacks all year Long after giving up almost 230 yards through the air throughout the season. With Injuries to Troy Polamalu and veteran Ike Taylor the Steelers found it hard to defend the pass and went on 3 game losing streak through November due it it after starting the season 6-2. Cornerbacks William Gay and Ike Taylor combined for just 2 interceptions, the lowest of any duo in the league this year. Ike Taylor had his first pick in week 3 and William Gay in Week 17. Troy Polamalu led the team in interceptions (2) and missed most of 6 games through a MCL Sprain.

Where do they go from here?
The Steelers enter the offseason with many questions over there poor form of defense during the course of 2009. Will Ryan Clark be back? Should William Gay still be starting? Can we win without Troy Polamalu being completley healthy? The Steelers will answer these questions come when Free Agency Opens and when the Draft Starts. Having a defense that could only get a league low 10 interceptions and get shredded throughout the Air raises questions as to whether they can get back to the Post Season next year.
