My Mood: Confused
Default the internet: one of the greatest inventions or one of the worst?

pros: allows everyone to communicate with many different people (races, countries, viepoints).
everyone to do research, find facts, order/sell anything.
come out of a social shell.
free constant information flow.
avoids government control
many others

cons: disinformation can be percieved as fact.
conspiracies run rampant.
allows for evil (and usually isolated) to communicate, plot, reinforce zealotry.
stifles physical interaction
allows for poor grammar, writing, and "internet bullying"
allows for other things once considered to be fringe and societally unacceptable to grow strength(pedophilia, sex trafficking, child porn, bestiality, etc.)
increases reliance, therefore things people once could do/handle, may now be clueless (read a map, use a phonebook, go to a library, mail a bill, etc.)
many others

just thought id throw this out there. been weighing this for awhile. been on the net more of late, and some things are truly firghtneing ans some truly great. if you just read the comments after blogs and youtube videos, you can understand why. i find the commentary more informing than anything else. are there truly that many people like minded, or on the other side, on the fringes?

oh.....since he did invent the net, is al gore the pervaor of humanity or the destroyer of worlds?

I think the free exchange of information and opinion is a wonderful thing. It has it's downsides (example our resident troll), but those are minor.

i also agree. i think its usefulness and positives outway the negative. i just thought id throw it out for something to discuss as a less heated, emotional, or political topic.
im just wondering if the internet may qualify as a "pandora's box" of sorts.

I can understand going back at someone if they take a shot at you first, but there's no need to take a thinly-veiled jab at someone who hasn't even posted in the thread, is there?

I don't think its the greatest or the worst. As others have noted, it has opened us all up to communicate, share, find no end of great stuff, and waste entirely too much time. It's freedom in the abstract. You're free to do whatever you want to. But freedom bears responsibility.

Its probably displaced TV a great deal and thats what I like about it. Active v passive. Find anything you have interest in. Now. Instant gratification.

I haven't gone Christmas shopping in more than a decade. Internet. Eezy peezy.

nothing more i hate then christmas shopping. i guess greatest/worst isnt a great way to describe. but more do the positives outway the negatives, and are there really that many fringe people out there?

goes along the lines of, if you really want a related but offhand concept, War.
or military, to better state it.
negatives:
death, destruction, pain, suffering, etc. we all get the gist of that. which is what most people think of when they relate to the purpose of the military.

however, positives:

all the technology, and things that we either wouldnt have, or not yet have.

internet, wirless communication, 747s (large aircraft), large shipping vessells (military, merchant, luxury), pistols, semi-automatic weapons, pre-packgaed/survival food, NASA, satellites, explosives, etc.

of course, we all would choose peace, instead. but, for discussion, it is interesting all the positives that come from such things.

As long as there are three people there will be politics. As long as there are politics, there will be war. Its in the DNA. And war drives technology.
