I'll open with pot roast. My Mom made the best ever with its own gravy. Potatoes, onions and carrots. One pot and outstanding. Why? Pot roast = Mom. We've done a bunch of pot roasts over the years, but have never topped Mom's. Its a damn mystery I tell you!

Runner up - Lasagna. Garlic bread. Salad. The bomb. Spaghetti can be substituted.

2nd runner up - Meat loaf and mac & cheese.

All for the same reasons.
as a single mother who worked a full time job and part time 7 days a week, pot roast, potatos and carrots was a main staple every sunday during my high school years. why? it was easy to prepare, my brother, sister, and i could serve ourselves, and we had leftovers the next night and roast beef sandwiches the following.

i equate that meal with moms delicious cooking, and watching football every sundays.

if your ma cooked it anything like mine did, i think bay leaves might be the magical ingredient. that and plenty of soy sauce.

(bay leaves and brown sugar were also the secret ingredient in her 3 day pots of spaghetti sauce).

my mom also cooks better chicken fried rice than any ive ever had (other than a dive tai joint we have in town). she learned it from the negritos housekeeper she had as a kid, when my grandpa was stationed in the phillipines.

while ive tried to learn all her "home cooking" it is difficult to get it just right as (like you said in another thread) all ingredients are done by eye.

she made me the white rice last week as i prepared all the rest to fry it up. it is quite a compliment when you take moms a bowl and they say it was good (even though you know it will never be as good.)

her lasagna is one of my favorite meals (and one i havent yet tried myself). a pot of spaghetti sauce used to be good for atleast 5 meals- spaghetti twice, and the leftovers used for lasagna which lasted another 2 days.

other moms comfort foods-

beef stew, turkey/egg noodle soup, pinto beans and cornbread.

teh great thing is all these meals taste even better the 2nd day as leftovers.

my own personal comfort food is grilled NY strip steak and beer... or buffalo wings... and beer.

Love Mac and Cheese too.

But I'm with Vincent on the Lasagna, garlic bread and salad. Yummy.

Nobody makes lasagna like my mama.

And beer isn't a food guys!

Comfort foods growing up was goulash with homemade egg noodles Also Sauerkraut with pork roast Also ham and beans but i think the most comforting food has to be milk gravy and biscuits every sunday morning. oh and we would spread out a newspaper every so often and pop so much popcorn.

Since i have been married and had kids every sunday morning i get up and make pannycakes (that is what my daughters called them and now that is what my boys call them) the secret to making them is adding a little cinnamon then topping them off with peanut butter and syrup mmmm good eating for sure. my most comforting food my darling and wonderful wife make is fried chicken mash taters white gravy green beans and biscuits. Id be the happiest 500lb man alive if she would make it every night for supper.

But most of all i think that supper time is the greatest time of the day i get to sit down with my kids and just talk laugh and sometimes have a heavy heart talking to them. Just do me a big favor if you have a kid or kids remember to sit down with them and laugh a bit cause some day you will not be able to do that.
