My Mother in Law makes some of the best home made Pierogies. Everytime she comes to visit she makes a whole batch of them for me so I can freeze them and have them later. You are right though, I miss Pittsburgh and her food. I miss walking down Da Stip on Saturday morning and smelling all the ethnic foods being prepared. Good stuff.

Pierogies Plus infamous pierogies (especially the meat pierogies! ) and haluski.
My homemade meat and veggie spaghetti sauce over spinach ravioli.
Pot roast (made with a tri-tip roast) with baby red potatoes and carrots.
A hot bowl of oatmeal on cold, snowy days like this!

It would seem that the "comfort" in all these memories is as much the family as the food.

My Mom worked but she managed to put out a spread every night for dinner and breakfast, lunch, and dinner on the weekends. And all of sat and enjoyed. I wouldn't trade those memories or those of our family for all the tea in China.

I can think of a long list of "comfort foods", including many that have been listed already.

I love Primanti's Sandwiches----to me, they say "Pittsburgh" and, therefore, Home. (I haven't lived there in over 20 years, but Pittsburgh is Home. Always wiil be).

Gumbo----it's a New Orleans thing. Those that have lived there know what I mean.

But, growing up Italian, my absolute favorite comfort food is Italian---lasagne, spaghetti, various other pastas, Gnocchi, etc
I remember as a kid going to Grandma's house in Morningside on Sundays---our family and my cousins...
We would eat the most elaborate Italian meal and watch the Steelers Dominate everyone they played.
After dinner, a gazillion other relatives would show up...
Good Food
Good Times

Hmmm. I think you're onto something; perhaps favorite cereals should be its own thread.

Capn' Crunch was always a fave of mine.

Very gentlemanly of you WarDen.

By all means, someone start a cereal thread.

Since farina is akin to grits, mine would be cheese grits with grilled shrimp. Now that's a proper breakfast.

For me, it's breakfast. Pancakes, Sausage, Bacon, Fried Eggs, Fried Apples, Biscuits & Gravy, Orange Juice, Milk and Coffee (i don't drink it, but still, the aroma must be present) and Fresh Fruit (Banana's, Apples and Oranges.)

It reminds me so much of growing up...where mom would make this about once a month (and not necessarily in the morning...this was often times a Saturday night meal).

I do this for the kids about once every 3-4 months.
